New York City - a major character of the show

It's only the last one of many impressive displays of what the town was at the time when the show was conceived and produced and broadcasted. I always thought that NYC was one of the main characters of the show. The show itself is a reply to the conditions of the urban life at that time - and to life tout court, symbolized by NYC, with an Above and a Below. A layered reply, lucid but full of compassion.
