LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE

THE OTHER CHARACTERS

Some of them are in almost every episode, others in only one or two of them. They can have a capital importance in the show, or just add substance to its universe. Here's a little gallery of portraits.

Father (Roy Dotrice)

Right after the leading couple, he's the most important character in the show. Founder and charismatic leader of the world Below, he adopted and raised Vincent. He governs the community in a wise, generous way, but tends to overreact when he thinks Vincent's or the tunnels' security are at stake. Irascible, stubborn, and something of a misanthropist (of a misogynist as well) because of a tormented past, he's fiercely opposed to Vincent's relationship with Catherine, even though his initial wariness toward her will evolve toward respect and a gruff affection as the story progresses.

Joe Maxwell (Jay Acovone)

Assistant to the Manhattan District Attorney, and Catherine's boss. He had trouble acccepting her at the beginning because of her background, but soon became one of her best friends. Very protective toward her, he might be a little in love with her, as well, though he'll never say a word about it.

Elliot Burch (Edward Albert)

Catherine's suitor from Above, maybe the man she might have loved if she hadn't met Vincent. A wealthy, powerful and somewhat mysterious businessman, he has his own dark side. Seen by Vincent both as a rival and as a possible alternative for Catherine to their impossible relationship, each of them will have the opportunity to save the other's life, but they'll only meet, in a very dramatic way, during season 3.

John Pater, a.k.a. Paracelsus (Tony Jay)

The recurring villain in the first two seasons. A former friend and companion of Father's, he founded the tunnel community with him, but was banished because of his dictatorial tendencies. Hiding in deep, infernal-like tunnels, he has two obsessions: to get his revenge over Father and push Vincent toward the dark side of his personality.

Devin (Bruce Abbott)

An important character, though he appears only in two episodes, because on the occasion of his return, a lot is revealed about Vincent's childhood. They grew up together like brothers, and we'll learn that Devin is in fact Father's biological son. The scars on his cheek are the result of a childhood quarrel with Vincent.

Mouse
(David Greenlee)

His vocabulary may be limited, but his imagination knows no boundaries. A genius inventor, he can also be somewhat incontrollable.

Narcissa
(Beah Richards)

The Tunnels' "witch", or fairy godmother. Her sightless eyes can perceive things that are invisible to common mortals, but she often speaks in riddles.

Pascal

(Armin Shimerman)

Raised in the tunnels and lifelong friend of Vincent's, he reigns over the pipes that transmit the communications in the world Below

Peter Alcott
(Joseph Campanella)

A doctor, he's known Catherine from the day he brought her into the world. He also happens to be a longtime friend of Father's, and has been helping the world Below since its foundation.

Mary (Ellen Geer)

Nurse, caregiver, midwife, she can be seen as a sort of "Mother" to the tunnel community.

Charles Chandler

(John Mc Martin)

Catherine's father. A recurring character in the first two seasons, up to "Orphans".

Jamie (Irina Irvine)

The girl with the crossbow. Mouse's fearless accomplice, she doesn't hesitate to use her weapon for the tunnels' defence.

Rebeccawho provides light to the tunnel world

Winslow (James Avery)
who will sacrify his life to help Vincent save Catherine

Very important in the show, they represent both hope for the future and innocence in need of protection, and have a very special relationship with Vincent.
Here are a few of the Tunnel children.

Eric and his sister Ellie

Geoffrey, Kipper, and Samantha

Above

Jenny Aaronson, Nancy Tucker, Edie, and Rita Escobar
Catherine's friends, who each play an important part in one or several episodes.

My favorite

The very cute Kristopher Gentian (Franc Luz),
a mysterious artist who pursues Catherine in the episode "When the Blue Bird Sings".There are rumors that he might be a ghost, but ssshhh...

And finally...

Wouldn't do to leave out the two most important characters from Season 3

Gabriel (Stephen Mc Hattie)

Diana Bennett (Jo Anderson)

He brilliantly takes over the part of the "diabolical villain" left vacant by Paracelsus' demise, and will be responsible for the tragedy that strikes our beloved heroes in that fateful season, before receiving his well-deserved punishment.

Season 3's new female lead, she helps Vincent in his quest to avenge Catherine and rescue their son.
