FROM NIGHTMARES TO SWEET DREAMS

By Dawn Yzaguirre

In this story Vincent and Catherine finally become lovers. Then Catherine discovers that she is pregnant with their child. But before she can tell Vincent Lisa returns to the tunnels. Why has she returned? What will be the repercussions for Vincent and Catherine? Will Catherine have to raise their child by herself?

Catherine sat in her office in the District Attorney’s office. She was busy working on the last deposition for her case that would be going to trial soon. She sighed and put down her pen. Then she looked out the window into the dark night and sighed. She wanted more than anything to be home with Vincent but this case was taking up all her free time. This was her biggest case since Joe had appointed her as Assistant District Attorney. She loved her job and was proud of it but she found that she had doubts about her abilities in the new position. Joe had been very supportive and he had all the confidence in the world in her. She also knew that Vincent believed in her. But she still had a lot of self-doubt.

She picked up her pen again and sighed. She was about to start writing again when she looked up and saw Joe standing outside of her office. She smiled and waved him inside. He opened the door and stepped into the office. “Radcliffe I thought that you left hours ago.” Catherine smiled and shook her head. “No such luck Joe.” He sat his briefcase down and then sat down on the sofa. “So what in the world are you working on this late?” Catherine smiled again. “I am helping Jeannette with the last of the depositions for the Robertson Case.” Joe smiled and shook his head. “You just can’t help yourself can you?” Catherine looked at him confused. “What is that supposed to mean Joe?” Joe sighed. “Radcliffe you are the new Assistant District Attorney it is not your job to work on depositions.” Catherine nodded. “I know that Joe but Jeannie has been so great about staying late this week that I decided to finish them myself and let her get home on time.” Joe shook his head again. “What about you Cathy?” Catherine sighed. “Well Vincent is working on a project in the lower tunnels this week he will not be home until tomorrow night.” Joe suddenly understood. He had met Vincent a few months earlier and was now a helper and a good friend to the couple. “So that is why you have turned back into Catherine Chandler workaholic.” Catherine smiled. “Yes I suppose that it is.” Joe then rose from the chair he was sitting in. Catherine watched in shock as he walked around the desk and pulled the pen out of her hand. Then he closed the folder on the desk. “Radcliffe you need a night off so you are going home.” Catherine sighed and shook her head. “Joe I have to get this done the case is going to trial soon.” Joe nodded. “I know but you need a rest.” Then he thought. “In fact I want you to take a few days off.” Catherine sighed. “I can’t do that we are too busy right now.” Joe smiled. “Yes Radcliffe you can and you are that is an order.”

Catherine sat there for a few moments then rose. “All right Joe you win I cannot fight you on this.” Joe smiled. “No you can’t I am the boss around here remember.” Catherine smiled. “Yes I remember.” Then she gathered her things. “So what are you doing here this late?” Joe smiled. “I am working on my speech for the Mayor’s reception.” Catherine giggled. “I am so glad that I am not attending that thing this year.” Joe smiled impishly. “I could always have you tag along with me and Jenny.” Catherine turned and scowled at him. “No chance Maxwell I am the new Assistant District Attorney but I don’t have to do that anymore.” Joe laughed. “All right Cathy.”

Catherine then smiled. “Speaking of Jenny how is she doing?” Joe smiled. “I guess you have not seen much of her lately.” Catherine shook her head. “No we have not even had the chance to get together for lunch.” Joe laughed. “Well she has been extremely busy with this new show.” Catherine turned slightly and smiled at him over her shoulder. “And you get upset with me for working too hard.” Joe sighed. “Well after this show is over she will not be working as hard.” This statement intrigued Catherine. She turned and smiled at her boss. “And what is that supposed to mean?” Joe shook his head. “Oh I have really put my foot in it now.” Catherine smiled mischievously. “All right Maxwell what are you trying so hard not to tell me?” Joe smiled. “We found out yesterday that we are finally having a baby.” Catherine squealed and ran around the desk and embraced him. “Joe that is so wonderful!” Joe smiled proudly. “We are very happy about it.” Catherine moved out of his arms. Then she smiled. “I will have to call her soon.” Joe looked at her pleadingly. “Cathy you can’t tell her that I told you anything okay she will kill me if she finds out.” Catherine laughed. “Oh boy I now have some blackmail material.” Joe looked at her shocked. “You wouldn’t!” Catherine giggled. “Well Maxwell play your cards right and I won’t.” Joe shook his head and smiled.

After a few seconds he stood and grabbed his briefcase. “I have to get going I am picking Jenny up in a few minutes.” Catherine smiled. “Okay tell her I said hi.” Joe shook his head. “Not a chance Radcliffe I am waiting and walking you to the elevator.” Catherine shook her head. “Joe that is not necessary.” He smiled. “Cathy I know you when I get on that elevator you will sit down and start working again.” Catherine sighed. “Oh all right let’s go.” Then she grabbed her purse and briefcase and they left the office.

Meanwhile in the tunnels Vincent and the other work crewmembers were entering the hub. Kanin smiled. “It is so good to be home again.” Vincent smiled at his friend and nodded. “Yes my friend we have been gone a long time.” Kanin nodded. “Yes and I have missed Livvy and the boys.” Vincent smiled. “I know you have my friend.”

Suddenly a voice came from behind them. “And I bet Vincent has missed a certain lady Assistant District Attorney.” Kanin and Vincent both turned to see Cullen smiling impishly behind them. Vincent smiled shyly. “Yes I have missed Catherine very much.” Then Jason, a new tunnel resident, spoke up. “Are you going above to see her tonight?” Vincent looked at the young man and shook his head. “No it is pretty late and she is probably sleeping by now.” Kanin put his hand on Vincent’s shoulder. “Vincent wouldn’t a few minutes with Catherine after a week apart be better than nothing?” Vincent sighed. “Yes but she is so busy at work I don’t want to disturb her.” Cullen smiled at him. “Vincent I am sure that she would be more disturbed to know that we came home a day early and you did not go above to see her.” Vincent knew that his friends were right. He had missed her very much while they were gone. “All right you have convinced me I will go change then go above to see her for a few minutes.” They all smiled at him and nodded. Then they watched as he turned and ran down the tunnel. “We did not have to twist his arm too much.” Jason laughed. Kanin smiled at the younger man and shook his head. “No I believe that he had already decided to go see her I think he just needed some prodding.” Then they all started walking toward the main chambers once again.

While this was happening Catherine arrived home. She unlocked the door to her apartment and entered. Then she bolted the lock again. She looked around the room and sighed. She kicked off her shoes and picked them up. Then she walked into the bedroom. After putting her shoes in the closet she decided to take a nice warm shower. She looked in the closet and picked out a gown and a robe. She lay them on the bed then closed the door to her closet again. She started walking toward her bathroom when she looked down at the gown and robe that she had chosen. She smiled and picked them up and held them to her chest. They were Vincent’s favorites. They matched the color of his eyes. She then looked out the doors onto the balcony. Oh my love please hurry home I miss you so much. She thought to herself. She then suddenly shook her head to clear her thought. No use in making us both miserable Cathy. She chided herself. Then she picked up the gown and robe. She walked into the bathroom and closed the door behind her.

Below in the tunnels Vincent entered his chamber again. He had just finished with his bath. He was putting his dirty clothes away when he suddenly felt a rush of emotion come through the bond. He smiled when he realized how much she missed him. Then he quickly finished putting his things away. Grabbing his cloak from the bed he put it around his shoulders. He was about to leave his chamber when he spotted the brown pouch that held the porcelain rose that Catherine had given him on their first anniversary. I am coming to you my precious angel just hold on. He thought. He kissed the pouch then put it around his neck. He then turned and picked up his cloak. Swinging it around his broad shoulders he ran from the chamber.

He knew that he had to tell Father that he was going above so he headed toward the main chamber. When he arrived at Father’s chamber he found him there with Mary. They both looked up and smiled. Father was the first to speak. “Vincent we are glad that you are home.” Vincent smiled at his parent then moved into the chamber. “I am glad to be home again Father.” Then he embraced his parent.

Once they parted Vincent turned and smiled at Mary. “Hello Mary how are you?” She smiled and embraced him. “I am fine Vincent welcome back.” Vincent released her then looked at Father again. “We were able to stop the leaking in the lower tunnels.” Father smiled and nodded. “That is good maybe we can avoid any flooding this year.” Vincent nodded in agreement. “Vincent are you going above tonight?” Mary asked. Vincent looked at her and smiled. “Yes I thought I would go above and see Catherine for a few minutes.” Mary smiled at him then at Father. “That is good dear she did not get to stay below tonight.” Vincent looked at Mary concerned. “Why would she stay below has something happened?” Mary smiled and patted his hand. “No dear she is fine she has just been staying below most of this week because she misses you so much.” Vincent smiled. “She has?” Father smiled at his son. “Yes she wanted to be as close to you as she could without you being here.” Vincent shook his head. “She is an amazing woman.” Mary nodded. “Yes she definitely is.” Then Father cleared his throat. “Well my son you better be getting above now.” Vincent smiled and nodded. “Yes I should.” He turned and climbed up the steps again.

He was about to leave the chamber when Father spoke once again. “Oh and Vincent if you decide to stay above until tomorrow just send a message down tomorrow morning with Peter.” Vincent turned and stared at him. “Father what are you talking about?” Father smiled. “Vincent you and Catherine have been separated for the whole week things do happen.” Vincent walked back down the steps into the chamber. “Father our relationship has not advanced to that point yet.” Father smiled at Mary when he heard the word ‘yet’. “I know that Vincent but as I stated things do happen.” Vincent smiled and shook his head. “Father you are a hopeless romantic.” Father chuckled. “Yes and you love that about me.” Vincent smiled again and kissed his forehead. “Yes I do.” Then the younger man turned and left the chamber.

Above Catherine walked out of her bathroom and turned off the light. She smiled as she looked at herself in the mirror. Vincent I wish you were here with me tonight. She thought. She once again shook her head then started to walk toward the living room. She stopped and looked out the French doors onto her balcony. She smiled and decided to go out and look at the view. She unlocked the door and walked out into the warm night air. She loved the sight of the city at night but she wished with all her heart that she were in her beloved world below the city.

As she was standing there Vincent quietly leaped onto the balcony. He smiled when he caught his first sight of her in a week. My Rose you are the most beautiful woman in the world. He thought as he silently watched her. After a few seconds he could no longer stand being separated from her. He silently padded up behind her. She had not moved and he knew that she was still unaware that he was there. He smiled as he gently encircled her in his strong but gentle arms.

Catherine was at first startled when she felt his arms then she smiled when she realized that it was her love. Vincent then leaned forward and whispered in her ear. “I hope that you are thinking of me.” Catherine could hardly contain herself she was so happy that he was home. Vincent smiled and tightened his arms around her when he felt her emotions come flooding through the bond. She leaned back against his chest. “I cannot believe that you are here.” Vincent sighed and gently turned her around to face him. “Yes my Catherine I am home.” Catherine smiled up at him then she wrapped her arms around his waist. “Are you going to kiss me hello?” Vincent chuckled. “Of course my love I thought you would never ask.” Then he leaned forward and captured her lips in a very passionate kiss. Catherine moved her arms up and encircled his neck. Vincent smiled into the kiss then without breaking the contact rose to his full height bringing Catherine with him off her feet.

When they parted Vincent put Catherine back on her feet. She smiled up at him then lay her head back on his chest. She sighed when she heard his heart beating. “I have missed you so much this week.” She whispered. Vincent tightened his arms around her. “And I have missed you.” Catherine moved back and looked up at him. “Can you stay a while?” Vincent sighed and shook his head. “I only came for a few minutes I know that you need to get your rest for work tomorrow.” Catherine smiled impishly. “Well Vincent I was told by my boss that I was taking a few days off because he believes that I have been work too hard so I am on vacation until next Friday.” Vincent smiled. “I cannot say that I am upset about this news I know that you have been working far too hard.” Catherine smiled again. “Yes I thought that you would be happy about Joe’s decision.” Vincent nodded. “Yes he is my friend and he knows that I will not be very happy with him if he works you too hard.” Catherine nodded and laughed. “Yes I am sure he knows that.”

Then she moved into of his arms again. “So now that you know that I am not working tomorrow will you stay for a while?” Vincent hesitated for a moment then smiled. He then realized that he could not leave her after only a few minutes but found that after a week away from Catherine he could not leave her. “Yes of course I will stay.” She smiled and took his hand. “Come inside I was going to make myself a late dinner would you join me?” Vincent took her hand in his. “Of course I will my love.” Then they moved into the apartment.

After Catherine closed and locked the balcony doors they moved into the living room. “Will you build us a fire while I go prepare our dinner?” Vincent smiled. “Of course Catherine.” She walked toward the kitchen then stopped. “Have you eaten?” Vincent shook his head. “No we only got home about a half an hour ago and I wanted to come see you as soon as possible.” Catherine smiled. “Well then will you join me for a late supper?” Vincent nodded. “I would love too.” Catherine then walked into the kitchen.

Once their dinner was ready she put their plates on a tray. She entered the living room and found Vincent sitting on the sofa waiting for her. “Here we are my love.” Vincent stood and moved toward her. He smiled and took the tray out of her hands. “I will take that my love.” She smiled at the endearment. “All right would you like some wine or tea with our dinner?” Vincent thought for a moment. “Some wine would be wonderful.” Catherine nodded and turned back toward the kitchen. “I will be right back.” She then reentered the kitchen. Vincent put the tray down on the coffee table then sat down on the sofa once again.

When Catherine came out of the kitchen she was carrying a bottle of wine and two glasses. “Here we go.” She sat down on the sofa beside Vincent and opened the wine. She poured one glass and handed it to him. “Here you are Sweetheart.” Vincent smiled lovingly at her and took the glass. “Thank you my Catherine.” She then poured herself a glass. Vincent looked at her when he sensed her turmoil through the bond. “Catherine what is bothering you?” She looked up at him. “Nothing is bothering me.” Vincent put down his wineglass on the coffee table then he turned toward her and took her hand. “Catherine I feel your turmoil please tell me what is troubling you.” She sighed and put down her glass. “I suppose I am just anxious about this new case that I am prosecuting.” Vincent let go of her hand and cupped her cheek. “Why are you so anxious about it you are an excellent lawyer.” Catherine sighed and rose. Vincent watched as she began to pace. “Vincent I am not sure that I am truly cut out to be Assistant District Attorney.” This statement truly shocked Vincent. “Catherine why would you doubt your abilities all of a sudden?” She stopped pacing and looked at him. “It is not really all of a sudden I have felt this way ever since Joe gave me the job.”

Vincent stood and moved over in front of her. “Catherine look at me please.” She looked up into his beautiful blue eyes. “My love as I said a moment ago you are an excellent lawyer and I have all the confidence in the world in you.” Catherine smiled. “I know that you do but I just don’t want to fail with this case.” Vincent reached down and took her hand in his once again. He led her back toward the sofa where he sat down. Then he pulled her down into his lap. Catherine was a bit surprised by this action. Vincent had never let himself act so bold. “Catherine you are going to do a wonderful job with this case no matter the outcome.” She smiled. “You have that much confidence in me?” Vincent smiled and nodded. “Yes my love I do.” They sat there together for a few minutes then Catherine smiled. “We better eat our dinner before it gets cold.” Vincent smiled and tightened his arms around her. “In a few minutes I just want to hold you for now.” She smiled and laid her head on his shoulder. They sat there and listened to the crackle of the fire happy that they were together.

Later after they had eaten their dinner Catherine rose from the sofa. “Why don’t you pick some music for us to listen to?” Vincent nodded. “I am going to put these in the sink.” She picked up the tray and walked into her kitchen. Vincent watched her as she left the room and smiled. I love you my Catherine. He thought to himself. Then he rose and walked to the stereo. He tuned in the station that they liked and stood there listening to the beautiful soft music. He then moved back over to the sofa where he sat down and closed his eyes.

After a few minutes he heard the water running in the kitchen sink. He smiled slyly and rose from the sofa. He walked into the kitchen and walked up behind Catherine. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her back against him. She smiled when she felt his warm breath on her ear as he began to whisper. “What are you doing now?” Catherine smiled. “I am washing our dinner dishes.” Vincent tightened his arms around her. “Couldn’t you do that later?” Catherine sighed as he began to lightly trail kisses down her neck. She moved her head to the side giving him greater access. She sighed then whispered. “Why do you want me to do this later?” Vincent lifted his head then gently turned her around to face him. “Because I want to do something else right now.” Then he captured her lips in a very passionate kiss.

When they parted both were breathless. Catherine dried her hands then put them around his neck. “That was the most amazing kiss.” Vincent smiled then pulled her closer. “Yes my angel it was.” Then he suddenly knew where their destiny was leading them. In that moment he made the most important decision of his life. “Catherine I want to make love to you.” This statement shocked her. “Are you certain Vincent I don’t want you to do anything that you may not be ready for.” He smiled and put a clawed finger to her lips. “Yes my Catherine I am certain I want to make love to you tonight.” Catherine smiled happily and tightened her arms around his neck. “Then my darling I want you too.” Vincent smiled then took her lips in another passionate kiss. Without breaking the kiss he gently lifted her into his arms and carried her out of the kitchen toward the bedroom.

Later that night Catherine awoke to find Vincent laying besides her looking at her. She smiled happily and turned toward him. “How long have you been awake?” Vincent smiled and bent forward to gently kiss her. “Not long my angel.” Catherine smiled as she began to leisurely caress his chest. “Vincent that was everything I knew it would be.” Vincent tightened his arms around her. “Yes Catherine it was.” The she noticed that he seemed lost in thought. “Darling is there something wrong?” Vincent felt her worry through the bond. He looked down at her once again and smiled. “No my love tonight has been one of the happiest of my life.” She lifted up onto her elbow and cupped his cheek. “But there is something bothering you.” She smiled lovingly at him. “Darling please tell me what is the matter.” He turned his head and gently kissed her palm. “I was just thinking about how much time I wasted pushing you away.” Catherine finally understood what was bothering him. “Love don’t punish yourself for that you were just afraid.” Vincent sighed. Then he rose from the bed and slipped into his jeans. He then walked out onto the balcony and looked out over the lights of the city.

Catherine was extremely concerned about him. She quickly rose from the bed and put on her robe. Then she walked out onto the balcony. She walked up behind him and slipped her arms around his waist. Vincent lifted one of his hands and covered her two hands with his. “Catherine I am so sorry.” She was shocked by his apology. She came around to stand beside him. She placed her hand under his chin and pulled his face around toward her. “Vincent look at me please.” He turned his head until their eyes met. “Please don’t punish yourself for needing to take your time.” She smiled gently at him. “Vincent you are the love of my life and I would have waited forever for you.” He sighed then pulled her into his arms. “I was so frightened that you would eventually grow tired of waiting.” Catherine lifted her head from his chest. “That would never have happened I love you more than I have ever loved any man in my life.” Vincent smiled and tightened his arms around. “As I love you my Catherine.”

Catherine smiled up at him again then she noticed the mischievous glint in his eyes. “What are you up to?” Vincent smiled and scooped her up into his arms. “Nothing my sweet one I just want to go back to bed.” Catherine giggled. “Oh you do?” Vincent captured her lips in a passionate kiss. When he released her lips he smiled again. “Yes my love I do.” Then he carried her through the balcony doors back into the bedroom.

Early the next morning just before dawn Catherine awoke to find Vincent still sleeping beside her. She turned toward him knowing that he had to leave soon. Leaning over toward him she kissed him until his eyes begin to flutter. He opened his eyes and saw her smiling at him. “Morning love it is almost morning.” Vincent looked back over his shoulder toward the balcony. He saw that the sky was getting lighter. He sighed sadly and then slowly got out of bed. Catherine sat up and watched him as he began to dress. “I wish you could stay with me today.” Vincent stopped dressing and smiled at her. “Catherine you said last night that you did not have to work for a few days?” She smiled and nodded. “Yes I am off until next week.” Vincent then made a very important decision. “Catherine if it is your wish I would love to stay here with you today.” She smiled happily and opened her arms. “Oh yes Vincent come back to bed my love.” He smiled and removed the clothes that he had put on then he quickly returned to her bed and to her loving arms.

As they were kissing Catherine thought of something. She broke the kiss suddenly. Vincent looked at her concerned. “What is it my angel?” She smiled. “Vincent should we let one of the helpers know that you are staying today?” He thought a moment then smiled. “Yes Father told me last night before I left that if I decided to stay with you today to contact Peter.” This shocked Catherine. “He actually said that?” Vincent chuckled. “Yes I think he was expecting that something could happen between us after an entire week apart.” Catherine could not help but giggle. “Oh he did?” Vincent nodded. “Yes I believe he did.” Catherine sighed. “Well I always said that he was a very intelligent man.” Vincent laughed at her statement. “Yes my love and he seems to know us pretty well.” Catherine smiled. “Yes I believe he does.”

She then pulled away from him. “Where are you going?” She smiled as she started to get out of bed. “I am going to call Peter.” Vincent smiled and pulled her back toward him. “Catherine it is still very early wait until later then call him.” She nodded in agreement. Then she got back in bed. “You are right I can call him at his office.” She then lay back in his arms. “Now what do you think we can do to pass the time?” Vincent chuckled. “I am sure we can think of something.” Then he captured her lips in a very passionate kiss that quickly burned out of control.

Later that morning Catherine called Peter. “Peter this is Cathy I was hoping that you could pass a message to Father for me.” Peter smiled knowingly. “Of course honey what is the message?” Catherine looked at Vincent who smiled. “Tell him that Vincent is safe with me and that he will return below tonight.” Peter chuckled. “All right honey have a wonderful day with Vincent.” He then hung up. Catherine put down the receiver and smiled. “Well that is all done.” Vincent sat up in bed and reached out for her. “Good now come back here.” Catherine giggled at the growl in his voice. “Why whatever for?” She teased. Vincent smiled slyly and pulled her down on top of him. “We have some unfinished business to tend to.” Then he captured her lips in a very passionate kiss.

When they finally rose from the bed a couple of hours later Catherine looked at Vincent. “Would you like something to eat?” Vincent smiled. “Yes I would for some reason I am famished.” Catherine giggled. “I wonder what could have made you so hungry?” Vincent chuckled. “As if you didn’t know.” Catherine giggled once again and put on her robe. “While I am preparing breakfast why do you go take a shower?” Vincent smiled and moved toward her. He wrapped his arms around her and looked into her eyes. “Could I interest you in joining me for my shower?” Catherine smiled. “No sweetie you go ahead I am going to fix brunch.” Vincent sighed and released her. “All right I will be out in a few minutes.” Catherine smiled and nodded. Then she moved out of the louvered doors and walked toward the kitchen.

In the bedroom Vincent was about to pick up the towel that Catherine had left for him when he smiled. I will sit here and wait until she comes looking for me then we will take that shower. He smiled mischievously and then sat down on the bed. Catherine was preparing their brunch she was about to put it on the table when she realized that Vincent was still in the bathroom. She was beginning to get concerned about him.

Catherine moved toward the louvered doors and quietly opened them. She entered the room and turned to close them again. Suddenly two strong arms came around her waist. “I was waiting for you.” Catherine smiled. “Oh you were?” She then turned toward him. “I thought you were taking a shower?” Vincent smiled slyly. “No I wanted to take my shower with you.” Catherine giggled. “Vincent we have brunch waiting.” Vincent picked her up. “It can wait I want that shower.” She smiled and kissed him. “Oh all right you win.” Vincent smiled. “I know.” Then he carried her into the bathroom. Their shower was a very sensuous experience for both of them. They learned more about one another than either could ever expect. When the water-cooled Vincent carried her back into the bedroom where they once again made love.

After they ate brunch they decided to relax and read to one another. As Vincent was reading one of their favorite poems he noticed that Catherine was lost in thought. She was lying on the sofa with her head in his lap. He lay down the book and smiled down at her. “What are you thinking about Catherine?” She smiled up at him. “I was just remembering something that Joe told me last night.” Vincent smiled. “What is that?” She smiled again. “He told me that he and Jenny just found out that they are going to have a baby.” Vincent smiled. “That is wonderful they will make wonderful parents.” Catherine smiled again and sat up. “Yes they will.” She then touched his cheek. “I wish that we could have a child.” She whispered. Vincent suddenly grew very quiet. Catherine noticed this and smiled. “Don’t worry love we don’t have to talk about that.” She assured him. Vincent sighed. “I love you Catherine.” She smiled and kissed him gently. “And I love you.” Then she lay back down. “Will you read another poem?” Vincent sighed and picked up the book again. “Yes of course my love.” But deep inside Vincent’s heart was breaking for what he knew they could never have.

That night they ate a wonderful dinner together. All too soon it was time for Vincent to leave. “I hate for this wonderful day to end.” Catherine smiled and moved out of his arms. “So do I my love.” Vincent smiled. “Can I interest you in coming below tonight?” Catherine smiled. “I would but I have some work to catch up on here at home but I can come later this week.” Vincent smiled. “That sounds wonderful I will be counting the days.” Then he kissed her. “Will I see you tomorrow?” Vincent sighed. “No I have to go on an all day work detail.” She smiled. “That’s all right my love.” Then they reluctantly parted. “Good night my Catherine I love you.” Catherine smiled at him. “And I love you.” Then he was gone.

The next morning Vincent awoke in his chamber alone. He missed Catherine terribly. He loved waking up next to her. He rose from his bed and dressed. Then he sat down at his writing table and took out his journal. Opening it to a blank page he thought for a moment then began to write.

These have been the most amazing couple of days. Catherine and I have finally carried our relationship farther and become lovers. Catherine is the most amazing woman. She is the greatest thing that has ever happened in my life. I just wish that we could be together everyday. There is only one thing about our relationship that I regret. Last night Catherine told me that Jenny is pregnant. I am very happy for our friends. They will make excellent parents. But the thing that grieves me is that this is one thing that we can never share. Father and Peter have both told me that it is very unlikely that I will ever be able to father a child. I don’t know if I can do this to Catherine.

Vincent read the entry in his journal then sighed. He closed the journal and decided that he should go and talk to Father. He rose from his chair and walked out of the chamber. When he reached Father’s chamber he found him their looking at one of his ledgers. Father looked up when Vincent entered the chamber. “Ahh Vincent I was not aware that you were awake.” Vincent smiled. “I just woke up a little while ago.” Father smiled and nodded. “Well come have some tea.” Vincent walked down the steps and sat down. “So how is Catherine?” Vincent sipped his tea then smiled. “She is fine.” Father smiled and nodded. “Father I think you should know that Catherine and I became lovers.” Father smiled. “I thought as much when Peter told me you were staying above.” Vincent nodded. “Are you and Catherine all right?” Vincent smiled. “We are fine.” Father smiled.

After a few moments of silence Father realized that something was wrong. “Vincent I thought you would be happier about the change in your relationship with Catherine.” Vincent looked up at him. “I am happy about it Father.” Father touched his hand. “Then tell me what is bothering you.” Vincent smiled. “I can’t hide anything from you can I?” Father smiled. “Not much my son.” Vincent smiled lovingly at him. “Father I wanted to talk to you about something important.” Father smiled. “What is it Vincent?” Vincent took a deep breath and started. “Father is there any chance that you and Peter were wrong about me not being able to father a child?” Father was taken back by this question. “No Vincent I don’t believe so.”

Then Father looked at him closer. “Why do you ask?” Vincent sighed and rose. He started pacing. “Yesterday Catherine told me that Jenny is pregnant.” Father smiled. “That is wonderful she and Joe will be excellent parents.” Vincent stopped. Then he smiled. “Yes they will.” Father then noticed the sadness in his face. “Vincent what else happened?” Vincent sighed and sat down again. “Catherine told me that she wished we could have a child.” Father nodded in understanding. “Vincent I don’t believe that we were wrong about our observation your metabolism is just too different to allow you to father a child.” Vincent nodded in understanding.

Father took a few moments then spoke again. “Vincent I am sure that in time Catherine will come to understand this limit in your relationship.” Vincent rose and began to pace again. “Father I don’t want her to have to understand this limit!” He stated vehemently. Father sighed. “I know you don’t Vincent but you must face facts.” He remarked. Vincent stopped pacing. “How long can I expect Catherine to live with this?”

The sadness in his voice broke Father’s heart. “Vincent if you are concerned about this maybe you should let Catherine find someone above who will be able to give her children.” Vincent turned and stared at him. “Father we are lovers now I could not let her go even if I wanted too.” Father nodded. “I just hoped that you had changed your diagnosis because having a child is just as important to me as it is to Catherine.” Father touched his cheek. “I know my son I am so sorry.”

Vincent then rose from his chair and moved toward the entrance of the chamber. Before he left Father spoke again. “So what will you do?” Vincent turned at the top of the steps and looked at him. “We will be all right we just won’t let this stop us from loving one another.” Father smiled. “That is good Vincent just love each other.” Then Vincent left the chamber. Father shook his head sadly. How I wish things could be different for Vincent and Catherine. He thought to himself. Then he went back to reading his ledgers.

While this was happening above in her apartment Catherine was sitting in her living room thinking about Vincent’s reaction to her wish to have his child. Maybe he does not want me to be the mother of his children. She thought. She was very confused by his reaction to the news about Jenny’s pregnancy. He was happy for Jenny and Joe but that did not explain his reaction. She started to feel extremely sad about it. She could not understand why Vincent would make love to her if he did not want her as his mate or the mother of his children.

Suddenly the phone rang. Catherine picked it up and smiled when she heard Jenny’s voice. “Hey Cath what are you doing at home today?” Catherine smiled. “Your husband gave me a few days off.” Jenny giggled. “I guess he is going soft.” Catherine laughed. “Yes I guess.” Jenny heard the sadness in her friend’s voice. “Cathy what is wrong?” Catherine smiled. “Oh nothing really.” Jenny giggled. “No way Chandler you are not getting out of it that easily meet me at Tavern on the Green in fifteen minutes for lunch.” Catherine smiled. “Oh all right but give me half an hour.” Jenny smiled. “Okay I will meet you then.” They both hung up and Catherine quickly changed.

Half an hour later Catherine walked into the restaurant. “Hey stranger.” Jenny said from behind her. Catherine turned and hugged her friend. “You look great Jenny.” Jenny smiled. “He told you didn’t he?” Catherine giggled. “Don’t be angry with Joe I dragged it out of him.” Jenny smiled. “I find that hard to believe he has hardly been able to keep his feelings to himself since we found out.” Catherine smiled. “Yes he is rather cute.” Jenny smiled. “Yes he is.”

Then Jenny noticed that something was wrong with Catherine. “Cathy what is the matter you don’t seem yourself.” Catherine smiled. “I am fine Jenny.” Jenny smiled and shook her head. “No way Chandler spill your guts.” Catherine was about to speak when a maitre’d came up to them. “May I show you to your table?” Jenny smiled. “Yes the name is Maxwell.” The man checked the reservation book and smiled. “Yes Mrs. Maxwell right this way.” He led them to a table toward the back. “What may I get you ladies to drink?” He asked. Catherine smiled. “I will have a red wine please.” The man nodded. Then he looked at Jenny. “I will have a club soda with lemon.” He then moved away from them. “Will it bother you that I am drinking?” Catherine asked. Jenny shook her head. “I have not drank alcohol in months.” Catherine nodded.

A little while later after their orders were brought out and they were eating Jenny looked up at Catherine. “Okay now talk!” Jenny ordered. Catherine looked up and smiled. “You should have been a lawyer you know that?” Jenny smiled. “That is what my husband tells me but don’t change the subject.” Catherine put down her fork. “Vincent and I became lovers last night.” She whispered. Jenny smiled brightly. “Oh that is wonderful!” She whispered excitedly.

Then Jenny noticed the sad look in Catherine’s eyes. “So then what in the world is the problem?” Catherine looked at her. “It is really nothing Jen don’t worry.” Jenny touched her hand. “No way Chandler what is going on?” Catherine sighed. “I told him that you are pregnant and his reaction confused me.” This confused Jenny. “Why how did he react?” Catherine smiled. “He was extremely happy for you and Joe.” She assured her friend. Jenny smiled. “But when I told him that I would love to have his child he did not say much so I thought it best to drop the subject.” Jenny thought a moment. “Cathy remember what you told me a couple of months ago about Vincent’s metabolism?” Catherine shook her head. “You told me that Father and Peter thought it was not possible for him to father a child.” Catherine suddenly remembered that conversation. “Oh Jenny what was I thinking?” She asked distraught. “Cathy don’t worry everything will be fine.”

Catherine suddenly put her fork down and pulled her napkin off her lap. “I have to go Jen.” She then rose and grabbed her purse. “Where in the world are you going?” Jenny asked. Catherine looked at her. “I have to make this right with Vincent.” Jenny stood. “Okay let’s pay the check I have to get back to work anyway.”

They paid their bill then left the restaurant. “Call me soon and let me know how things are.” Catherine hugged her friend. “You know I will thanks for everything Jen.” They embraced. Then they headed in opposite directions.

Catherine soon entered the park. She walked briskly down the path leading in the direction toward the drainage tunnel. She noticed that the park was almost completely deserted. Most of the noon crowd had returned to work. As she reached the drainage pipe she looked around. When she did not see anyone looking at her she ducked and walked inside.

In his chamber Vincent is reading. He suddenly cocked his head when he heard the familiar tapping of the code Catherine used. Putting his book down he grabbed his cloak and ran out of his chamber to meet her. He knew that something was wrong he had felt her turbulent feelings all day.

When he arrived at the park entrance he opened the secret door. Catherine looked up at him as he stepped out of the tunnel. “Catherine my love what has happened?” Catherine began to cry and flew into his arms. Vincent held her tightly and gently rocked. “Oh Vincent I am so sorry.” Vincent could understand why she was apologizing to him. He moved slightly back and looked into her eyes. “Catherine you have done nothing to be sorry for.” She shakes her head. “Yes Vincent I have I doubted you.” Vincent was very confused. “What do you mean you doubted me?” Catherine calmed down and moved away from him. “When you did not react happily to my wish to have a child with you I presumed that you did not want me to be the mother of your child.” Vincent moved forward and pulled her into his arms again. “Oh my love how could you ever think that?”

Then he leaned back and dried her tears with his thumbs. “Catherine the only woman I could ever want a child with is you.” He assured her. She nodded. “I know Jenny reminded me what Father and Peter told you about your metabolism.” She whispered. Vincent smiled. “So you and Jenny have been discussing our relationship?” He asked smiling.

Catherine smiled and began to explain. “She sensed that something was going on and called me to have lunch with her.” She began. “Then she told me that she knew that something wonderful had happened for us.” Catherine smiled. “I had to tell her about us becoming lovers or she would have never let me get out of that restaurant.” Vincent chuckled. “That sounds like her.” He whispered. Catherine nodded. “I then told Jenny about the other part that I was afraid that you did not want to have a child with me and she reminded me about what Father and Peter said.” Vincent embraced her. “Catherine I wish I could give you this gift.” He whispered. “Maybe I should not have bound you to me by making you mine.” Catherine lifted her head from his chest and leaned back in his arms. “Don’t say that I am proud to be yours because I love you more than you can ever know.” Vincent nodded. “Yes but becoming my lover robbed you of ever having a child of your own.” She cupped his cheek. “Vincent I would never change that we now belong to one another.” She then leaned forward and kissed him.

As the kiss deepened Vincent moaned. Catherine smiled inwardly at how she was affecting him. When they finally parted both of them were out of breath. “Catherine can you stay below this afternoon?” She smiled. “Whatever for Vincent?” He caught the teasing in her voice. “I want to make love to you in my chamber.” He whispered. Catherine smiled. “Don’t you have other things you need to do?” Vincent suddenly swept her into his arms. “No my love the work crew could not go today so I am free the entire afternoon.” Catherine smiled slyly. “The entire afternoon huh?” Vincent smiled. “Yes and I intend to spend it in my chamber in my bed making love to you.” She shivered at the passion in his voice and the darkness of his eyes. “Yes my love that sounds like a wonderful idea.” Vincent then moved toward the secret lever. Catherine pushed it and the secret door slid open. He then captured her lips again in a passionate kiss and walked to his chamber.

When they arrived at his chamber he put her on her feet. “Let me put a lantern out and tap a message to father on the pipes.” She smiled and nodded. “I will return in a moment.” He whispered. Then he kissed her again. She smiled as she moved away from him. “Go do what you have to do so you can come back here and make love to me all afternoon.” She whispered. Vincent smiled then left the chamber. Catherine quickly undressed and slid into the cool sheets of Vincent’s bed. She loved being in his bed. She smiled when she remembered how he took care of her while she was below after her attack. He was always so tender and loving to her while he cared for her. She loved him so much from that moment she soon realized.

Vincent returned and smiled when he saw that she lay in his bed waiting for him. He quickly closed the tapestry then removed his clothes. He moved over to the bed and slid into the bed beside her. Catherine smiled and snuggled into his arms. “What was your message to Father?” She asked as she caressed his chest. Vincent smiled and kissed her forehead. “I told him that you were with me in my chamber and that we were not to be disturbed for the afternoon.” Catherine lifted her head. “Won’t he wonder why?” Vincent smiled and shook his head. “No he will know exactly why.” He stated. She looked at him shocked. “You told him?” Vincent nodded. “Yes I talked to him this morning after I woke up I wanted to find out if his and Peter’s opinions about me fathering a child had altered.” He whispered. Catherine laid her head on his chest. “Don’t worry my love we have one another and that is what is the most important.” Vincent turned toward her and smiled. “Yes my love it is.” He whispered. Then he captured her lips in an extremely passionate kiss.

Catherine moaned as the kiss deepened. Vincent moved from her lips to her neck. “I have never wanted anyone as much as I want you Catherine.” He whispered as he kissed and nipped at the soft skin of her neck. “Not even Lisa?” Catherine asked as she moved slightly back. Vincent cupped her cheek. “Not even Lisa.” He agreed. “Catherine as you have pointed out to me we were both teenagers and any feelings we had for each other were due to the changes taking place in our bodies.” Catherine smiled at him. “I have always wanted you to see that.” She told him. Vincent smiled. “Well my love it took your love to make me see it for myself.”

Then he pulled her back toward him. “Now I am through talking for a while.” He growled. He then began to kiss her throat again. Catherine sighed happily. “Yes Vincent.” She whispered. Vincent moved down her neck and kissed her chest very gently. He then looked up to see that Catherine’s eyes were closed. He smiled and moved his mouth down until he came to her breasts. Her nipples were taut and waiting for him. Vincent wordlessly drew one into his mouth and began suckling. Catherine moaned with pleasure and buried her hands in his mane. “Yes oh Vincent yes!” She cried as her body came alive. Vincent released her nipple and moved to the other. He then took it into his mouth.

Catherine was on fire. She needed him. She shivered as she felt his hand slide down her hip then slip between her legs. Catherine gasped when he touched her. “Oh yes!” She cried out. Vincent released her breast and looked into her eyes. “Does it please you when I touch you this way?” He asked. Catherine could only nod her head. She noticed that his eyes were extremely dark with passion. “Touch me Vincent please don’t stop!” She begged. Vincent smiled again then he gently slipped two fingers inside of her. She moaned as she began to move her hips to meet the rhythm of his touches. “Does that feel good?” He whispered seductively. Catherine moaned with pleasure. Vincent smiled as he gently kissed her lips. “I love when you are ready for me this way.” He whispered against her mouth. “Yes I am ready for you.” She whispered. But Vincent shook his head. “Not yet my love.”

She protested when he slipped his fingers from her body. She then watched as he moved down her body. She smiled as she felt him kiss her flat stomach. Then she gasped when she suddenly felt his tongue enter her where his fingers had just been. “Oh God Vincent yes!” She cried. Vincent lifted her legs and put them over his shoulders. Catherine’s head was thrashing back and forth on the pillow as she clutched at the sheets. Vincent’s tongue was doing things to her that she had never imagined. She had never had a man make love to her in this way. All the men she had ever been with would have never loved her with their mouth in this manner. She could not believe how wonderful and sensual it was. She had dreamed of Vincent doing this but she would never have had the nerve to ask it of him.

Vincent moved away from her. She moaned in protest as he moved back up toward her mouth. “Did I please you my angel?” Catherine smiled and nodded. “Yes my love I never knew that type of love before.” Vincent was shocked. “You have never been loved that way?” Catherine shook her head. “No you are the only one who has ever done that.” Vincent smiled. “I am glad that I was the man to give you that pleasure.” He whispered. Then he kissed her. Catherine smiled as his tongue played against her lips asking for entrance. She opened her mouth and met his tongue with her own. They each tasted the softness of one another’s mouths.

As the kiss ended Catherine sighed. “I love you so much Vincent.” He smiled and moved over top of her. “As I love you my beautiful one.” He whispered. Then in one thrust he entered her. Catherine moaned and began to match his rhythm with her own. “Yes my love.” She whispered. Vincent kissed her again. “I never wanted anyone like I want you Catherine no one.” He whispered breathlessly. Catherine could not speak her passion was rising fast. “Oh Catherine yes let it happen!” Vincent moaned. Then they were both overtaken by their orgasms. Vincent stifled her scream and his roar with a hard kiss.

When they had both come back to earth Catherine smiled. “That was the most amazing lovemaking we have shared.” She whispered. Vincent lifted his head from her chest. “Yes my love it was.” She smiled. “Are you all right?” Vincent smiled. “Oh yes my love I am fine.” She chuckled. “You look like you are out of shape.” Vincent chuckled then pinned her arms down on the mattress. “You were not saying that a few moments ago or yesterday.” He teased. Catherine giggled. “No I suppose I wasn’t.” She agreed. “So are you ready for round two?” Vincent asked. Catherine smiled. “Yes my love if you are I am definitely ready.” Vincent smiled and captured her lips again. They made love over and over for the entire afternoon as he had promised.

Later that evening they had a quiet dinner together in his chamber. “Can you come above tonight Vincent?” She asked smiling. Vincent put down his fork and shook his head. “No my love the council meeting will more than likely last very late tonight.” Catherine smiled. “You could come above afterward.” She hinted. Vincent smiled. “Are you certain I won’t be there until about midnight or later.” She smiled again. “Yes I am sure if I am in bed when you get to the apartment just come in.” Vincent smiled. “All right my love I will come to you tonight.” He then rose. “Are you ready Catherine I will walk you to the threshold.” She smiled and rose. “Yes I am ready.” She answered. Vincent smiled and took her hand as they left the chamber.

When they reach the threshold Catherine came willingly into his arms. “Remember if I am in bed the door to the balcony will be unlocked.” She whispered. Vincent smiled and squeezed her lovingly. “Yes my love I will remember.” He answered. Then he captured her lips in a passionate kiss. Their kiss was interrupted when a message over the pipes told him that the meeting was about to begin. “I must get back.” He whispered regretfully. Catherine smiled. “Until later my love.” She whispered. Then she moved away from him. Vincent watched until she was gone then he returned to the home chambers.

When he entered Father’s chamber everyone was waiting. “I am sorry Father I was seeing Catherine out.” Father smiled. “That is quite all right.” He answered. “Now shall we get down to business?” Father asked. And they started the meeting.

Catherine returned to her apartment and locked her door. She kicked off her shoes then moved into her bedroom. She put them in the closet then grabbed a gown and a robe. Then she went into the bathroom and took a shower. After her shower she dried off. Slipping into the gown and the robe she walked into the kitchen to make herself some tea. She then moved toward the balcony with her tea. Sitting down on her chaise she was soon sleeping peacefully.

After the meeting concluded Vincent informed Father that he was going above and would not return until dawn. Father smiled knowingly at Mary. They had heard the earlier interlude between Vincent and Catherine but would never say anything. “Of course my son.” Father answered. Then Vincent left the chamber. “I am so happy for them.” Mary mused. “So am I Mary.” Father agreed. “So am I.” He then invited Mary to accompany him to the kitchen chamber for a cup of tea.

When Vincent arrived he saw Catherine asleep on the balcony. He smiled and knelt down beside her. He gently stroked her cheek for a moment. Then he called her name. Catherine was instantly awake. “You are here.” She whispered. Vincent smiled and nodded. “Yes my love I am here.” He answered. “What are you doing sleeping out here?” He asked. Catherine sat up and stretched. She winced when she felt the kinks in her neck. “I was sitting here then I fell asleep.” She explained. Vincent saw her wince again. “Are you all right my love?” He asked concerned. Catherine smiled. “Yes I suppose I just should not have slept in this chair.” She remarked. Vincent smiled. “I have a remedy for that.” He responded. “What is that remedy?” She asked smiling. Vincent wordlessly picked her up and carried her into her bedroom. He lay her down on her bed then smiled. “I will be right back.” He moved into her bathroom as she watched. He found the jasmine scented massage oil on the counter top. Retrieving it he moved back into the bedroom.

Catherine smiled when she saw the oil. “Massage?” She asked. Vincent smiled. “Yes my love.” He answered. Then he smiled. “Take off your gown and robe please.” She smiled and did as he requested. She then smiled. “This is not fair you have too many clothes on.” She pouted. Vincent chuckled and removed his clothes. “Is this better my angel?” She smiled. “Definitely better.” She whispered. “Now turn onto your stomach.” He requested. She did as he asked once again and smiled when she felt him begin to massage her neck and back. “Hmmm that feels so good.” She whispered. Vincent smiled as he kneaded her soft skin. “It feels good for both of us.” He answered. Vincent’s hands moved down her body as he massaged her.

Catherine’s passion was rising fast. Vincent smiled as he felt it through their bond. He bent forward and whispered in her ear. “Just a bit longer my love.” Catherine moaned softly. Vincent smiled at the way he was torturing her. “Vincent please I need you now.” She whispered. Vincent stopped his massage then rose to his feet. Catherine turned onto her back and held out her arms. “Come to me Vincent.” He nodded. Then he joined her in the bed. “I love you my Catherine.” He whispered as he touched her body. Catherine moaned as he touched her. “And I love you.” She answered. Then when neither could take it any longer Vincent entered her. Their loving was very, very slow and passionate just as it had been in his chamber that afternoon.

Over the next couple of weeks Vincent came above and spent every night with Catherine. She would come below on the weekends and stay with him in his chamber. They were extremely happy. Everyone that knew them was also very happy for them. They could see how in love Vincent and Catherine were. Everyone prayed that this would lead them to finally having a life together.

Then one Thursday evening Vincent arrived at Catherine’s apartment. She smiled and ran into his arms. “I have missed you so much today.” She whispered. Vincent smiled. “And I have missed you.” Catherine noticed that he looked troubled. “Darling is something wrong?” Vincent sighed and moved into the living room. “I have some bad news.” He stated. Catherine looked at him alarmed. “Has something happened below?” Vincent shook his head. “No I have to go away tomorrow for a couple of weeks.” Catherine sighed and sat down on the sofa beside him. She moved over and nestled into his arms. “What has happened?” Vincent held her and began to explain. “Some of the pipes are about to burst and Father is worried that our communication system will be shut down.” Catherine looked up at him. “I know you must go but I will be completely miserable without you.” Vincent tightened his arms around her. “As I will be without you my Catherine.” Then he released her. “I will come back as soon as I can.” He assured her.

She looked at him for a moment. “Do you have to leave right now?” Vincent smiled and put his arms around her again. “No but I will have to leave shortly.” Catherine put her head on his shoulder. “Just hold me until you have to leave.” She requested. Vincent once again wrapped his arms around her. “Yes my love I will hold you until then.” They sat there for the next while wrapped in each other’s arms.

The next few days were very busy for Catherine she kept herself busy at work trying not to think about missing Vincent too much. To make things worse she had started feeling ill shortly after he left. She tried to ignore it but finally she called Peter from work. “Hello this is Dr. Alcott.” He responded when he answered the phone. Catherine smiled. “Hello Peter it’s Cathy.” She answered. “Hello honey to what do I owe this call?” He asked. Catherine smiled. “I was hoping I could see you during my lunch hour.” She stated. Peter was immediately alert. “Honey are you okay?” He asked. She giggled. “You are the doctor that is what you are supposed to tell me isn’t it?” He laughed. “Young lady I want you in my office in thirty minutes.” He ordered. Catherine smiled and looked at her watch. “All right I will be there.” Then she hung up.

She rose and packed her briefcase. Rita saw her and walked toward her desk. “Skipping out early?” She asked. Catherine smiled. “Not hardly I have doctor’s appointment.” Rita nodded. “Where is Joe?” Catherine asked. Rita shrugged. “He just called this morning and said he would be in after lunch.” She remarked. Catherine nodded. “All right I will see you later.” Then Catherine left the office.

A little while later Catherine entered Peter’s office. He smiled and hugged her. “Now young lady let’s see what is going on with you.” He remarked. They walked into his examining room. Catherine sat down and he began the examination. When it was over they moved back into his outer office. “So what is going on with me?” Catherine asked. Peter rose from his chair and sat down on the corner of his desk in front of her. “Honey I need to ask you a very important question.” His tone of voice worried her. “Sure you can ask me anything.” She commented. “Honey are you seeing anyone other than Vincent?” He asked. Catherine stared at him. “Peter how can you ask me such a question?” She suddenly asked angrily. “I love Vincent with all my heart and I would never do that!” Peter put his hand on her shoulder. “Calm down honey I just need to know.” He told her. “Why would you need to know such a thing?” She asked still angry. Peter then took her hand. “Honey you are six weeks pregnant.” She sat there in shock for the next few moments.

After a few moments of silence Peter knelt down in front of her. “Cathy are you all right?” He asked when he saw her face. She suddenly smiled happily. “Oh Peter this is wonderful!” She exclaimed. Then she hugged him tightly. Peter smiled. “I am very happy for you and also for Vincent.” Catherine looked up at him. “But Peter how is this possible?” She asked. Peter smiled. “I think you know how it is possible.” He teased. She smiled and slapped his arm. “That is not what I mean.” She told him. He smiled. “I know that honey I just could not resist teasing you.”

Then he took her hand again. “Honey we were never 100% sure that Vincent would not be able to father a child.” He explained. “We figured that it would be impossible with his different metabolism but it was never proven.” Catherine suddenly rose. “Where are you going?” Peter asked. Catherine smiled radiantly at him. “I am going back to work and turn in my resignation effective immediately.” Peter smiled. “Well I can’t say that I am upset to hear that.” Catherine hugged him. “I am not doing anything to risk my baby.” She vowed. “When are you telling Vincent?” Peter asked. Catherine smiled our anniversary is in a couple of weeks I think this will be a wonderful present.” Peter nodded. “Yes I agree.” Then Catherine left his office.

When she arrived back at work Rita walked up to her. “Joe is here and wants to see you in his office.” Catherine smiled. “Thanks Rita.” She then walked toward his office. She knocked quietly at his door. “Come in.” He called out. Catherine entered the office. “You wanted to see me Joe?” She asked. Then she saw the look on his face. “Joe is something wrong?” She asked concerned. Joe rose and sat down on the sofa beside her. “Cathy last night I had to take Jenny to the emergency room.” He remarked. Catherine gasped. “Is she and the baby all right?” Joe shook his head. “Cathy she lost the baby early this morning.” He whispered. Catherine began to cry and embraced him. “Oh Joe I am so sorry.” She cried as she held him. “How is she doing?” Catherine asked. Joe sighed. “She is doing as well as she can.” Then Catherine put her hand on his arm. “And how are you?” She asked. Joe sighed. “I keep wondering if I could have done something to prevent this.” Catherine shook her head. “No Joe I am sure there is nothing that you could have done.”

Joe then looked at her. “Cathy I have a big favor to ask of you.” She nodded. “What is it?” Joe sighed. “When Jenny gets out of the hospital I am taking her away for a while to California.” Catherine smiled. “That is a great idea you both need time away together.” Joe nodded. “Cathy could you step in as D.A. until we get back?” Catherine was not sure how to answer. She sighed. “Joe I would but I came back this afternoon to resign.” Joe was shocked. “Why are you resigning?” He asked. Catherine smiled slightly. “I just found out that Vincent and I are having a baby.” Joe smiled and embraced her. “That is great kiddo.” He told her. She smiled. “I am happy about it.” Joe smiled again. “How is Vincent reacting?” Catherine chuckled. “He is away for a few days I am telling him in a couple weeks on our anniversary.” Joe smiled sadly. “That is great Cathy I am very happy for you both.” Catherine smiled. “I hope you understand why I can’t fill in for you.” Joe nodded. “Yes I don’t want you to do anything that will jeopardize you or that baby I will have Martin Robertson do it.”

Catherine rose from the sofa. “Joe I am going to see Jenny.” Joe smiled. “She will love that.” Catherine embraced him again. “Everything will be all right in time.” She whispered. “Just take care of yourself and Jenny.” Joe nodded. “That is what her doctor told us but it is hard.” She nodded. “I know Joe but you are both strong.” Then she left the office.

A short time later she quietly entered Jenny’s hospital room. Jenny was facing the window. Catherine could tell from her shoulders shaking that she was crying. Catherine moved toward her and laid her hand on Jenny’s arm. Jenny turned over and began to cry harder. “Oh Cathy I lost our baby.” Catherine sat down on the bed and pulled her friend into her arms. “Shh Jen everything will work out in time.” Jenny could not answer all she could do was cry.

Once she was calm Jenny lay back down. “So that husband of mine let you off early?” She asked smiling. Catherine smiled. “Well he had no choice I resigned.” Jenny was shocked. “Why did you do that?” Catherine was not sure how to answer. She was not sure what hearing her news would do to her fragile friend. “Oh it was for personal reasons.” She commented. Jenny shook her head. “No way Cathy what is going on?” Catherine looked down. “Jenny I am going to have Vincent’s baby.” She whispered. Jenny smiled. “Oh Cath that is great but what about what Father and Peter said?” Catherine smiled. “Well Peter told me that it was never officially diagnosed that it was mostly what they thought.” Jenny smiled. “That is great Cathy I am very happy for you both.” Then Jenny’s eyes began to tear up again. Catherine held her again as she cried.

After a few minutes Jenny was calm again. “So Joe told me that you and he were going to California.” Catherine remarked. Jenny smiled. “Yes he told me that he owed me a honeymoon.” Catherine smiled. “I think it is a great idea for both of you.” Jenny nodded. “I just hope that Joe and I can get through this together.” Catherine put her hand on Jenny’s. “Hey that is one thing that I am not worried about you and Joe love one another you will both be fine.”

After a while Peter entered the room. “Jenny I just heard about the baby I am so sorry.” He told her sympathetically. Jenny smiled tearfully. “Thank you Peter.” Catherine and Peter both noticed that Jenny was beginning to get sleepy. “Jen we are going to let you get some sleep now.” Catherine whispered. Jenny closed her eyes and nodded. Catherine then followed Peter into the hallway.

Once they were out of the room Peter took Catherine in his arms. “Shh honey she will be fine.” He whispered. Catherine cried for her friend. “Honey I want you to go home and take care of yourself.” He told her when she was calm. She dried her eyes and smiled. “I am going to go below I need to be there even if Vincent is not.” Peter nodded. “That is a great idea.” Then Catherine sighed. “I just wish I could help Jenny and Joe.” Peter nodded. “I know you do.” He responded. “Joe asked me to take over for him while he was gone.” She remarked. Peter shook his head. “No Cathy I will not let you do that.” He stated. Catherine smiled. “I told Joe I could not do it anyway.” Peter smiled. “What did you tell him?” She sighed. “I told him the truth.” She admitted. Peter held her again. “I am sure that was hard.” She nodded. “I did not want to tell him after he told me about Jenny but I did not know what else to tell him.” Peter smiled. “Honey you did what you had to do.” She smiled and nodded. “Well I will see you later I am going below now.” She stated again. Peter nodded. Then Catherine left the hospital.

A little while later Catherine arrived at her building. She quickly entered and went up to her apartment. After putting her briefcase inside and quickly changing clothes she left. She went down to the basement where the secret tunnel entrance was. Moving the boxes aside she looked around. When she found that no one was there she opened the door and climbed down the steps.

As she reached the tunnel floor she turned around and entered the main tunnel. She walked a little ways toward the hub when Jamie met her. “Hey Catherine what are you doing here Vincent is away.” The young girl commented. Catherine nodded. “Yes I know I just came to visit is Father in his chamber?” Jamie could see how upset she was. “Yes he is there with Mary.” She remarked. “Are you all right?” Jamie asked. Catherine shook her head. “Something happened and I need to talk to father.” She stated. “One of the helpers?” Jamie asked. Catherine nodded. “Yes my friend Jenny.” Jamie nodded. “Well I better get to my sentry post I will talk to you later.” Catherine smiled sadly. “All right talk to you later Jamie.” Then they parted and moved in their respective directions.

When Catherine reached Father’s chamber she took a deep breath to calm herself then entered. Father and Mary both looked up and smiled. “Catherine dear it is nice to see you.” Mary told her. Then she and Father both noticed that Catherine was very upset. Mary moved toward her and cupped her cheek. “Dear what has you so upset?” She asked concerned. Catherine could not hold back her tears any longer. “Oh Mary something terrible happened.” She sobbed. Mary looked back at Father horrified. She took Catherine in her arms and held her. “Dear what in the world is the matter?” She asked. Catherine could not answer for her crying. Mary moved her toward a chair and sat the tearful woman down. “Catherine it will be all right.” Father soothed as he reached out for her hand. Catherine looked at him. “Father this was so sad.” She whispered.

Mary knelt down beside her chair. “What is it Catherine please tell us.” Catherine calmed just a bit and dried her eyes. “I found out today that last night Jenny had a miscarriage.” She cried. Mary leaned up and held her once again. “Oh Catherine is she all right?” Father asked. Catherine nodded. “Physically she is fine but I am so worried about her and Joe they wanted the baby so much they were so happy.” Mary cupped her cheek. “Catherine sometimes unknown things happen that we cannot explain I am sure that in time Jenny and Joe will be fine they just need to deal with their pain.” Catherine nodded. “Yes I just wish that I could help them.” Father smiled. “The best way we can help the two of them now is to just be their friends.” Catherine smiled. “I know they will appreciate that.” She responded.

Suddenly the pipes came alive with a message. Vincent running toward Father’s chamber—P. Catherine looked at Mary. “I never thought about the bond.” She whispered. Mary looked at her. “What do you mean dear?” She asked. Catherine looked at her hands. “I never meant to bring him back from his work.” She whispered. Father smiled and squeezed her hand. “Catherine there is no way that he would have stayed in the lower tunnels with you in so much pain.”

At that moment Vincent ran into the chamber. Catherine saw him and rose. “My love are you all right?” He asked as he took her in his arms and held her. “No I am not all right.” She whispered. Vincent moved back and gently cupped her cheek. “Tell me.” He directed gently. Father cleared his throat. “Why don’t the two of you go back to your chamber so you can have some privacy.” Vincent looked at him. “Yes would you see that we are not disturbed for the afternoon.” Father smiled and nodded. “Of course my son.” Vincent then moved his hand from her cheek and took her hand in his. “Come my love.” He whispered. Catherine mutely nodded and followed him out of the chamber.

Once they were out of the chamber Vincent released her hand and put his arm around her waist. She moved closer to him and laid her head on his shoulder. Vincent was very concerned he knew through their bond that something very traumatic was happening and it was greatly affecting his love. He vowed to himself that before they parted today he would find out what was wrong and help her through it any way he could.

When they reached his chamber he led her inside. She sat down on the bed while he lit candles around the chamber. “Let me put a lantern in the passageway and put the tapestry over the chamber entrance.” Catherine looked up at him and nodded. Vincent looked at her for a moment sadly. He loved her so much and seeing her in so much pain and feeling that pain was killing him.

After he had left the chamber Catherine removed her shoes. She then removed her jacket. She smoothed her sweatshirt and gently touched her stomach. Her heart lurched in her chest for the child that lay in her womb. She was so frightened that something would happen to her and Vincent’s child just as it had to Jenny and Joe. Silent tears began to once again flow down her cheeks.

Vincent reentered the chamber and pulled the tapestry over the door. Then he walked across the chamber and pulled Catherine to her feet. He led her across the chamber to his ornate desk chair. Sitting down he gently pulled her onto his lap. Catherine lay in his arms like a small child who was in great pain. Vincent kissed the top of her head and tightened his arms around her. “What has happened?” He asked in a whisper. Catherine lifted her head from his chest and looked into his deep blue eyes. “I love you Vincent.” She whispered. Vincent smiled and cupped her cheek. “I love you too my Catherine with all that I am.” Catherine took a deep breath and began to speak.

“When I was got back from lunch today Rita told me that Joe needed to talk to me in his office.” She took a shaky breath. “I went to see him and he told me that last night he had to take Jenny to the hospital because she miscarried their baby.” Vincent was stunned. He pulled Catherine back into his arms and held her. “Oh Catherine I am so sorry.” He whispered. Catherine whimpered. “They are so devastated by this.” She whispered. Vincent sighed. “Yes I can imagine how devastated they are.” Catherine then lifted her head. “I could not help but put myself in her place.” She whispered. Vincent nodded. “Yes it would be devastating to lose a child.” Then he cupped Catherine’s cheek again. “It would destroy me if we had been able to have a baby and something happened to that child or to you.” Catherine nodded. “I don’t think I could survive that.” He added. Catherine lay her head back on his chest. “Neither could I.” She told him.

They spent the next few minutes holding one another close. Catherine wanted to tell him about their baby but she knew that given their discussion it would probably frighten him. So she decided to go with her plan and tell him in a couple of weeks on their anniversary.

When they were once again calm. Catherine sat up. “Joe is taking Jenny away for a while so that they can deal with their pain.” Vincent nodded. “That is a good idea they can be together without any interruptions.” Then he looked at her. “Who is taking his place at work?” Catherine sighed. “A man in the office.” She responded. “But you are the Assistant District Attorney.” He commented. Catherine nodded. “Yes but I was not sure I could take all that responsibility since I am new at my job.” She did not want to tell him that she had resigned. This was not the time to talk about that. “So this man has more experience?” Catherine nodded. “Yes he was A.D.A before Joe was hired then he left the position and Moreno gave it to Joe.” Vincent nodded in understanding. “Besides if I stepped in as District Attorney I would not have much time to spend with you.” She commented. “We could adjust it would only be temporary.” He stated. Catherine nodded. “Yes but with our relationship more personal now I don’t think I could stand being away from you more than I already am.” She whispered with an impish grin. Vincent smiled at her meaning. “Well when you put it that way I don’t believe I could stand that myself.” He whispered. Then he kissed her. They spent the remainder of the day talking and spending time together.

Later that night there was a message on the pipes reminding the council about their meeting. Catherine and Vincent lay snuggled together on his bed. They had not made love but they needed to be close to one another. “What was that all about?” Catherine asked. Vincent sighed. “We have another council meeting tonight.” He explained. Catherine rose onto one elbow. “Can you come above after the meeting tonight?” Vincent smiled. “Yes my love as soon as the meeting is over I will come to you.” Catherine smiled then sat up. “I should be heading home if you are coming up tonight.” She stated as she put on her shoes. “Can you at least stay for dinner?” Vincent asked. Catherine smiled. “Yes of course my love I would love to stay for dinner again.” Vincent smiled then he put on his boots. He extended his hand to her. “Come my love let us go.” He whispered. Catherine smiled and took his hand. “Yes of course let’s go.” Then they left the chamber.

After dinner Vincent walked Catherine to the threshold. “I will come above right after the meeting.” She smiled. “I will be waiting.” Vincent then wrapped his arms around her. “I love you Catherine.” He whispered. She smiled. “I love you too darling.” She then backed out of his arms. “I better go or I will not leave.” Vincent smiled mischievously. “That would not be so bad.” Catherine giggled. “No but I think they would miss you at the meeting because you definitely would not be there.” Vincent sighed and released her. “I suppose you are right.” He remarked. Catherine leaned up and gently kissed him. “I will see you later love.” Vincent smiled. “Yes my Catherine.” He whispered. She then turned and disappeared into the blue stream of light.

Once she was gone Vincent sighed. How he wished that Catherine could live with him below but he could never ask that of her. He still felt that to give up her job and her life above was too much of a sacrifice even to live their dream. He shook his head and turned toward the hub. He decided to go back to his chamber and put away some of his books that he used for his classes before he had to go to the meeting.

Catherine entered her apartment. She smiled as she leaned against the door. She loved Vincent more than anything in her life. She sighed as she gently touched her abdomen. He would be so surprised when he found that they were going to have a child. She smiled to herself. She could not wait until their anniversary to tell him. Taking a deep breath she moved away from the door. She checked her answering machine and smiled when she found no messages waiting. Then she moved into the bedroom. She decided to take a shower and change clothes. Moving to the closet she took out one of her gowns and her robes. Then she stripped out of her clothes. Then she entered the bathroom and closed the door.

Back in the tunnels Vincent smiled as he put some books on his shelves. He could feel through the bond how happy and content Catherine was. He could not wait until the council meeting was over so that he could go above and be with the woman he loved. Suddenly a message on the pipes summoned him to Father’s chamber. He put down the book that he was holding then swung his cloak around his shoulder. Then he quickly exited the chamber.

As he approached Father’s chamber he could hear voices. He knew that Father was talking to someone. He stepped into the entrance of the chamber and was shocked to find Father there with Lisa. She smiled and rose when she saw him. “Hello Vincent how are you?” Vincent entered the chamber and descended the steps. He was somewhat disturbed about her sudden reappearance. And he knew that Catherine would also be disturbed. “I am fine Lisa what brings you back to New York?” He asked. Father looked at his son. He knew by the way that Vincent was standing that he was very upset. “I came to see everyone.” She answered. Father cleared his throat. “How long will you be staying this time?” He asked. Lisa sat down in the chair she had vacated. Father and Vincent followed suit and sat down. “I want to come home for good.” She stated. This statement shocked both Father and Vincent. “What about your dancing?” Father asked. Lisa smiled. “I don’t want to dance anymore I have had enough of that life.” She responded. Vincent shifted in his chair. “But Lisa you loved dancing.” He remarked. She nodded. “Yes but now I just want to come back home.”

Vincent rose from his chair. “Lisa things have changed a lot since the last time you were here.” She looked at him surprised. “What has changed?” She asked. Vincent smiled. “I am very much in love with someone from above.” He stated. Lisa was shocked. “A woman from above?” She asked. Vincent nodded. “Yes you remember Catherine Chandler don’t you?” Lisa thought a moment and nodded. “Yes she was involved in that case I testified in.” Vincent nodded. “Yes that Catherine.” Lisa looked at him. “How long have the two of you been involved?” She asked. She was somewhat saddened that Vincent had found someone else but she realized that what they had felt for one another was nothing more than a childhood infatuation. “Catherine and I have been together for almost three years.” Vincent explained as he sat back down. Lisa looked at him shocked. “You were involved when I returned?” Vincent nodded. “Yes but not as serious as we are now.” He stated. “Vincent that is wonderful I am very happy for you.” She told him sincerely. “I hope that you and she are very happy together.” Father and Vincent smiled. “Thank you so much for that Lisa it means a lot.” Vincent told her.

She suddenly rose. “Well I will let you think about my request for a while Father.” She commented. “But I hope you will allow me to stay below and visit.” Father nodded. “Of course we will talk more later about your request.” Lisa nodded then picked up her suitcase. “Will I see you after your meeting Vincent?” He shook his head. “No I have plans tonight with Catherine.” Lisa nodded. “All right I will see you later then.” With that she left the chamber.

After she had gone Father looked at Vincent. “What do you think about her request?” The tunnel elder asked. Vincent shook his head. “I know Lisa and she is not telling us something.” He remarked. Father shook his head. “I just hope that this time is nothing like her last visit.” Vincent put his hand on Father’s. “I will talk to her and find out exactly what is going on.” Father sighed. “How do you think Catherine will react?” Vincent sighed and rose. “I am not sure Father Lisa’s presence here the last time almost cost me my relationship with Catherine.” He stated. “I will not risk that again.” He added. Father smiled. “You should go above and talk to her.” Vincent smiled. “I was going to go after the meeting.” Father shook his head. “No Vincent you need to go now Catherine is very dear to all of us and I don’t want her hurt by this.” Vincent nodded. “You are right Father I will go now thank you for understanding.” Father smiled. “Just take care of Catherine.” Vincent kissed him on the forehead then he turned and ran out of the chamber.

Above Catherine came out of her bathroom she smiled as she looked around the apartment. Then an idea came to her. She moved into the living room and placed candles throughout the entire apartment. After she was done she stood back and smiled. Tonight will be a night of passion and romance for us Vincent. She thought to herself. Then she knelt down in front of the fireplace and lit a blazing fire. After the fire was going she decided to go out onto the balcony. She opened the French doors and stepped out into the cool night air.

At that moment Vincent quietly vaulted over the balcony wall. He smiled as he watched her from the shadows. He thought of how beautiful she was. And how much he loved her. Suddenly Catherine became aware of someone watching her. She turned and smiled when she saw him. “Hello my angel.” Vincent whispered as he moved toward her. Catherine smiled and ran to him. “I missed you so much.” She told him as they held one another tightly. “And I missed you my Catherine.” Catherine then moved back in his arms. “The meeting ended early?” Vincent smiled and shook his head. “No Father told me not to worry about it and come above to see you.” Catherine smiled again. “I will have to thank him for that.” She remarked.

Vincent then saw the candles in the apartment. “This looks beautiful Catherine.” She smiled and moved out of his arms. She then took his hand. “I thought it would be romantic.” She stated. Vincent smiled. “I love the way you think.” They moved into the apartment and Catherine closed the balcony doors. Then they walked into the living room. Vincent took off his cloak and lay it over the sofa. Then he sat down. Catherine smiled as she moved toward the sofa. “Would you like some tea?” She asked. Vincent knew that he had to tell her about Lisa’s presence below. He shook his head. “No Catherine come sit with me.” She nodded then took his hand. She sat down beside him and snuggled into his arms. “This is so nice.” She whispered. Vincent held her tightly. “Yes my love it is.”

After a few moments of silence Vincent spoke. “Catherine I have something that I need to tell you.” She sat up and looked at him. “What is it Vincent has something happened?” Vincent sighed and rose. “Catherine after you left I was summoned to Father’s chamber.” He began. “When I arrived I found him talking to Lisa.” Vincent heard the gasp from Catherine and turned toward her. He could see the fear on her face. He was instantly sitting beside her again. “Catherine everything will be all right she will not come between us again.” He whispered as he held her. She tightened her arms around his waist. “I know that I should not be frightened by her presence especially now that we are lovers but Vincent I am very frightened.” He held her tighter. “I know my love but no one can ever come between us.” She lifted her head from his chest. “You are right we were not lovers when she was here the first time and everything is different now.” Vincent smiled and nodded.

Catherine cupped his cheek. “You were worried about telling me that she was visiting weren’t you?” She asked. Vincent sighed. “Catherine she is not just visiting she has requested to come back and live below.” Catherine’s heart began to hammer in her chest. “What did Father say to her request?” She asked as she looked down at her lap. Vincent lifted her chin until their eyes met. “He told her that he has to think about it and I am going to talk to her and find out exactly why she wants to come back.” Catherine took a shaky breath. “You think she is hiding something?” She asked. Vincent nodded. “Both Father and I got the impression that she was withholding something from us while we were talking to her.”

Catherine rose from the sofa and began to pace. “Then why would Father consider her request?” She asked. Vincent sighed. “Catherine she lived there most of her life.” He pointed out. She nodded. “I know Vincent but what I am worried about is how she will affect you with her presence if she is allowed to stay.” Vincent rose and came to her. “Catherine the feelings that we had for one another were just a childhood infatuation you helped me to see that.” He stated. “She could never take your place in my heart it belongs to you and you alone.” Catherine held him tightly. “Well whatever Father decides I know he will do what is best.” Vincent smiled. “Yes my love he will believe me he has the same concerns that you do.”

After a few moments of silence Catherine lifted her head from his chest and smiled at him. “Would you like some tea and apple pie?” She asked. Vincent tightened his arms around her. “Maybe later I only want you right now.” She smiled. “I see my attempts to seduce you worked.” She joked. Vincent chuckled. “You don’t have to seduce me Catherine I only have to look at you to want you.” Then he took her mouth in a very passionate kiss. That night they made love in front of the fireplace. Letting their passion burn as high as the flames of the fire.

Later that morning toward dawn Catherine awoke. She smiled when she found Vincent still beside her asleep. She leaned over and gently kissed him. His eyes fluttered open and he smiled at her. “It is almost morning.” She whispered. Vincent embraced her tighter. “Why are you awake so early?” He asked. Catherine looked at him shocked. “Don’t you have to leave?” Vincent shook his head. “No I told Father that I would return tonight I am going to spend the entire day making love to you.” He whispered. She smiled. “I think I could get used to that idea.” She remarked. Then she sobered. “Don’t you want to spend some time with Lisa?” Vincent cupped her cheek. “Catherine I will talk to her sometime but I only want to spend my time with you.” She smiled. “I love the sound of that.” He gently kissed her. “And I love you my Catherine. “Then love me again Vincent.” She requested. Vincent smiled and they were once again lost in their passion for one another.

Later that evening Vincent returned to the tunnels. He returned to his chamber and changed clothes. Then he decided to go and talk to Lisa. When he did not find her in her guest chamber he went to the falls. There he found her. “Hello Lisa.” Vincent remarked as he entered the chamber. She looked up and smiled at him. “Are you just getting back?” She asked. Vincent nodded and sat down. “Yes I returned a little while ago.” He commented.

Then Vincent looked at her. “I need to ask you something.” He told her. She smiled. “You and Father want to know exactly why I am coming back?” She asked. Vincent nodded. She smiled. “The reason I want to come back is that the man I love lives here.” Vincent suddenly became very uncomfortable. “Lisa as I told you Catherine and I are very much in love.” He explained. She smiled and put her hand on his. “I understand that Vincent the man I am talking about is Daniel.” Vincent looked up at her and smiled. “When did this happen?” He asked. She smiled radiantly. “We realized how we felt about one another a short time ago.” Vincent nodded. “I wish you had told us yesterday.” He stated. She giggled. “I know I just wanted to let Daniel know about my request first.” Vincent looked up at her. “He did not know?” She shook her head. “No he was just as shocked.” Vincent chuckled. “But I am sure very happy.” Lisa nodded. “Yes he has asked me to marry him.” Vincent embraced her. “That is wonderful I am very happy for you.” Lisa smiled. “Would you mind keeping it to yourself until we tell Father?” She asked. Vincent shook his head. “From everyone?” He asked. He wanted to tell Catherine immediately. “Yes but only for a few days.” She assured him. Vincent then rose. “I will let you tell Father then I will tell others.” He teased. She rose and smiled. “I bet you will.” Then they left the chamber to go talk to Daniel.

Over the next few days Vincent spent all his free time with Catherine. She began to feel very silly that she ever doubted him again. She vowed that she would never doubt his love for her again. They decided that on their anniversary they would have a romantic evening at her apartment. “I am looking forward to our anniversary.” He told her one night as they lay in bed together. She smiled. “So am I.” She answered. “I am going to make us a very romantic dinner then we can give our gifts to each other.” Vincent smiled slyly. “I hope our evening won’t end there.” She giggled. “Not if I have anything to say about that.” She commented. Vincent turned over and leaned over her. “And my angel you have everything to say about the subject.” He whispered. Then he kissed her again.

A few nights later on their anniversary Catherine was happily preparing their romantic dinner. She placed candles all around the apartment then out on the balcony around the table. They would be having dinner outside tonight. She smiled as she stepped back and surveyed her work. Then she moved back inside and dressed in the black dress that she had bought. Her small round stomach was not quite visible. She could not wait until she told him about their child. She prayed that he would be as happy about it as she was.

Below in the tunnels Vincent was in his chamber getting ready for his evening with Catherine. He smiled as he thought of the night ahead of him. He had decided that he would propose to her tonight and ask her to live below with him. He only had to ask Father for Margaret’s engagement ring before he left. Father had told him that he could have it if he ever proposed to her. He was also happy because he could finally tell her that Lisa and Daniel were engaged. They had told Father the night before and now they were planning their joining ceremony.

A voice from the entrance of the chamber broke into his thoughts. He turned to see Lisa smiling at him. “You look very handsome and dapper tonight.” She commented. Vincent smiled. “Thank you Lisa tonight is mine and Catherine’s anniversary.” Lisa’s smiled suddenly faded. Vincent noticed this immediately. “What is the matter Lisa?” He asked. She sighed. “Daniel and I were hoping that you could be here tonight to help us with the joining ceremony plans.” Vincent sighed. “I would but this is a very important night for me and Catherine.” She smiled. “I understand when do you have to leave?” Vincent smiled. “Not for a half an hour.” She smiled again. “Could you help us until then?” Vincent chuckled. “Yes of course I will.” Then he picked up his cloak and they left the chamber.

A couple of hours later Catherine was pacing in her apartment. She could not understand why Vincent was so late. Then suddenly she stopped. Oh God what if something has happened to him or to someone below. She thought. Turning she hurried into her bedroom. After changing clothes and making sure that all the candles were extinguished and the dinner was turned off she quickly left the apartment.

Below Vincent and Lisa had joined Daniel and Father in Father’s chamber. “This is going to be so wonderful.” Lisa mused as she squeezed Daniel’s hand. Father looked at Vincent and smiled. “Yes Lisa we are going to do everything we can to make it special.” Father remarked. She smiled at him. “I know you will Father.” Daniel then looked at Vincent. “Would you stand with me?” Vincent was speechless. “Of course my friend I would be honored.” Lisa looked at Father. “Since Master Po is performing the ceremony would you give me away?” Father smiled. “Of course dear I would love to give you away.”

At that moment Catherine entered the tunnels. She looked around and saw no sentries or anyone. This worried and frightened her. She definitely thought that something was wrong. She walked a bit faster as she neared the hub. As she came closer to Father’s chamber she was about to enter when she heard Lisa’s voice. “Oh Vincent isn’t this so wonderful this is going to be the most wonderful joining ceremony.” Catherine stopped and decided to listen to Vincent’s response. “Yes Lisa I am looking forward to it.” He responded. Catherine felt as if she had been stung. Vincent and Lisa are marrying! She thought angrily. She considered going into the chamber and confronting the two of them but she felt that she had been humiliated enough. She then thought of her and Vincent’s unborn child. She placed her hand gently on her small rounded tummy. Oh my baby what are we going to do? She wondered sadly.

She suddenly realized that she had lost Vincent to Lisa. She turned and walked away from the hub as fast as her legs would carry her. She felt as if her entire world was crashing in around her. She did not know what she was going to do with the rest of her life. Or how she was going to raise their child alone. But she knew that she could not come back to the tunnels no matter what. She vowed to herself to never enter this wondrous place again. Then she reached the ladder leading up to her apartment building. Looking back down the tunnel she knew that it was over because the bond had not brought Vincent to her. With one last swipe of the tears that were flowing down her face she climbed up the ladder for what she thought was the very last time.

A little while later she returned to her apartment. She entered the empty living room and looked around. She leaned against the door and tried to calm herself. She then saw the roses and the candles around the room. This was going to be the greatest night of our lives. She thought to herself. She then moved away from the door. Going into the bedroom she quickly made a life changing decision. She opened the closet and pulled out her suitcase. She then packed it. She would go stay up at her parent’s cabin for a while then she would decide where to go from there to have and raise her and Vincent’s child anonymously. She considered going to Westport to see Nancy but decided that there would be too many hard questions to answer. And she did not want to bring Nancy and Paul into it because of their friendship with Vincent.

Once she was done packing she carried her bag to the door. She was about to leave when she looked over at the phone. She thought about just changing her answering machine message but then decided that someone should know that she was leaving and that she would not return. She put down her bag and walked over to the phone. Picking it up she dialed Peter’s number.

After the second ring Peter answered the phone. “This is Dr. Peter Alcott.” She smiled slightly. “Hello Peter this is Cathy.” Peter immediately heard the tone in her voice. “Honey what has happened?” She was about to answer when her voice caught on a sob. “Honey has something happened to Vincent?” Then he cautiously went on. “Honey are you and the baby all right?” Catherine began to cry once again. “The baby and I are fine but it is over between me and Vincent.” She sobbed. Peter was stunned. “Honey please calm down what in the world are you talking about?” Catherine took a few deep breaths to calm her crying. When she had calmed a bit she began to speak again. “When Vincent was late tonight I went below because I was frightened that something had happened.” She began. “I got to Father’s chamber and I was about to walk in when I heard Vincent and Lisa talk about their joining ceremony.” The tears once again began to flow down her face. She could not stop them.

On the other end of the phone Peter sat down on the sofa shocked. “Cathy calm down are you certain?” He wanted to make sure that her hormones had not made her misinterpret the situation. “Peter I know what I heard tonight I was so foolish to believe that Lisa would not come between us once again but Vincent swore to me that would not happen.” Peter sighed sadly. “Honey calm down we can go below together and see what is going on I can be over there in a few minutes.” Catherine took a deep breath. “No Peter I am leaving the city.” Peter became very concerned. “Honey I wish you would stay so I can keep an eye on you and the baby.” She smiled at his fatherly concern. “I can’t Peter I would be too close to Vincent.” She whispered sadly. “Where will you go?” She hesitated in telling him fearing that he would tell Vincent. Peter heard her non-response and sighed. “Honey I won’t tell Vincent but I need to know so that if you or the baby need me I can get to you.” She realized that he was right. “I am going up to our cabin for a while then I will go somewhere and have my baby.” Peter was very frightened by this thought. “Honey you know that the baby could take after Vincent why don’t you stay here with me?” Catherine sighed. “Peter you have a tunnel entrance that Vincent uses almost regularly I cannot risk that.”

Peter rose from the sofa and began to pace. He was hurting for Catherine and at the same time he was angry with Vincent for doing this to her. “Honey please come stay here with me I won’t let Vincent come up here at all.” He pleaded desperately. She shook her head on the other end of the phone. “No Peter I am going to go to the cabin I will call you if I need you.” Then she abruptly hung up. She then dried her tears and rose. She walked over to the door and picked up her suitcase. She looked around the apartment once again then she looked out onto the balcony. Goodbye Vincent I will always love you and I vow to take care of our child forever. She then composed herself and walked out of the apartment.

Meanwhile in his home Peter was pacing. He was scared to death for Catherine and her baby but he was also very angry with Vincent for letting Lisa come between himself and Catherine once again. He was about to enter the secret tunnel entrance when he heard the front door of his house open. He backed out of the entrance and quickly closed it.

Susan then came into the living room and saw him. She smiled when she saw him but then she saw the look on his face and knew that something was wrong. “Dad are you all right?” He turned and looked at her. “No honey I just got a very disturbing call from Cathy.” Susan was immediately at his side. “Has something happened to her or to the baby?” He took her into his arms. “No sweetie they are fine.”

Then he began to speak again “but tonight Catherine went below when Vincent was late for their anniversary she was about to enter Jacob’s chamber when she heard Lisa and Vincent talking about their joining ceremony.” Susan moved back slightly and stared at him. “Dad that is not possible he loves Cathy not Lisa.” Peter sighed and released her. “Well apparently Lisa has won him over once again.” Susan knew that her father was very angry. She put her hand on his arm. “Dad calm down until we find out what exactly is going on.” Peter turned and looked at her. “No I won’t calm down I am going below right now and have a talk with him.” Susan shook her head. “No not now you are too angry.” Peter shook his head again. “Honey you don’t understand Cathy is leaving New York as we speak I have to find out what is going on.” Susan dropped her hand. “All right but Dad give Vincent the chance to explain I don’t believe that this is what Cathy really heard.” Peter nodded. “I will but I tell you I will never forgive him if he is marrying Lisa.” Then he entered the secret door to the tunnels.

When Peter arrived in the tunnels Mary was coming out of her chamber when she saw him. She was about to speak to him when she noticed how angry he was. “Peter are you all right?” He shook his head. “No I need to talk to Vincent immediately.” She nodded. “I believe that he is with Father.” She puts her hand on his arm. “Peter what is wrong?” He turns and looks at her. “I am sorry to be so short with you Mary but right now I am extremely angry with Vincent.” This shocked Mary she had never seen Peter angry with Vincent. “Peter may I go with you to Father’s chamber?” He smiles slightly. “Are you sure you want to hear this?” She nodded. “Yes I want to know what has you so angry with Vincent.” He nodded. “All right Mary you can come if you wish.” She nodded. Then they walked down the tunnel toward Father’s chamber.

Meanwhile Catherine was driving out of the city. She could hardly see because of the tears that were streaming down her face. I can’t believe that I was so stupid. She thought as she drove. But Vincent swore to me that she would never come between us again and that I was the only one he loved. She pulled over on the side of the road and laid her head down on the steering wheel. She could not stop the flow of tears. Then she lifted her head and dried the tears. No I won’t let Lisa take him from me our baby and I need him and I will fight for him. Catherine then turned around and headed back to Manhattan.

Back in the tunnels Peter and Mary arrived at Father’s chamber. They enter and both Vincent and Father greet him. “How could you do such a thing to Catherine?” Peter yelled as he approached Vincent. Father and Vincent were both shocked. “Peter what in the world are you talking about?” Father asked. Peter ignored him. “Vincent that girl loves you so much and you repay that love by making plans to marry Lisa!” He yelled. Vincent looked at him shocked. “What are you talking about Peter?” He asked. “I am not marrying Lisa.” Peter looked at Father who nodded. “Then what did Catherine hear when she came down earlier?” Peter asked. Vincent stared at him. “Why would she come down here?” He asked.

Then he suddenly got a horrified look on his face. “Father what time is it?” Father looked at his pocket watch. “Oh Lord Vincent it is almost 2:00a.m.” Vincent rose and put on his cloak. “I have to go above and talk to Catherine immediately.” He stated frantically. “Vincent couldn’t you sense her through your bond?” Father asked confused. Vincent looked at him and shook his head. “I have not said anything but for the past few weeks our bond has been getting interrupted spiratically.” Father looked at him shocked. “Do you have any idea why?” Vincent shook his head. “No and it really scares me.” He replied.

Peter realized from Vincent’s reaction that he had been right in the first place Catherine was mistaken about what she had heard. “Vincent I am sorry I just felt so angry when she called me crying that she had lost you.” Vincent sighed. “That is all right Peter.” He replied. “Vincent what did she hear exactly?” Peter asked confused. At this point Daniel spoke up. “Peter Lisa is marrying me not Vincent he was just helping us with the plans she must have heard them talking and misunderstood.” Peter nodded. “I told her that she had to be wrong.” He replied. Vincent put his hand on Peter’s shoulder. “I promise you Peter I am going to make this right with her tonight.” Peter looked at him again. “Vincent she is not at her apartment.” Vincent sighed. “Where is she I have to see her.” Peter knew that this was going to destroy Vincent. “She told me that she was leaving the city and that she was going somewhere anonymous.” Vincent plopped back down into his chair. He lay his head in his hands. “What have I done?” He cried. Father placed his hand on Vincent’s shoulder. “We will find her my son.” Vincent looked over at him through his tears. “How can we find her now that she is gone?” Peter knew that Vincent had to know about the baby. He had promised Catherine that he would not say anything about the baby but Vincent was in so much pain that he had to know why she left.

Peter knelt down on his knee and put his hand on Vincent’s arm. “Vincent there is something else that you need to know.” Vincent looked up at him. “What is it?” Vincent asked. Peter smiled. “I think I know why your bond with Catherine is being interrupted.” Father stared at him shocked. “How can you know why the bond is failing?” Peter smiled. “Because I was the one that gave Catherine the news.” Vincent looked up at him again. “What news Peter what are you trying to tell me?” Peter placed his hand on Vincent’s arm again. “Vincent Catherine is almost two and a half months pregnant with your child.” He whispered. Everyone in the chamber was shocked. “Peter you and I both know that that is not possible.” Father remarked. Peter shook his head. “Jacob neither of us were absolutely sure of the diagnosis it was never proven with medical tests.” He pointed out. “Catherine is having our child?” Vincent asked shocked. Peter smiled. “Yes my boy you are going to be a father.” Vincent smiled happily. “We can finally have a life together with our child.” He whispered.

Then he rose again. “I have to go find her.” He commented. He looked at Peter. “Do you have any idea where she is going?” He asked pleadingly. Peter smiled and nodded. “She told me that first she was going to her parent’s cabin to think then she was going to go somewhere so she could have the baby.” Vincent shook his head. “No I want her here below with me to have our child.” Peter placed his hand on Vincent’s shoulder. “If you get your things ready I will go get my van then I will take you to her.” Vincent smiled. “Thank you Peter I would appreciate your assistance.”

Daniel and Lisa suddenly rose. “Vincent I am coming with you.” Daniel told him. Vincent smiled and shook his head. “Thank you my friend but that is not necessary.” Daniel shook his head. “No Vincent you are going to need help to convince her and I want to help.” Vincent moved toward him and put his hand on Daniel’s shoulder. “I thank you for your help my friend.” Daniel smiled then he and Lisa quickly left the chamber. Peter moved toward Vincent. “I will go get my van then return to tell you what tunnel entrance to meet me at.” Vincent embraced him. “Thank you for telling me about the baby.” He whispered. Peter smiled as he moved out of Vincent’s embrace. “How can you thank me after I came in here yelling at you and accusing you of hurting Catherine?” Vincent smiled. “Peter I appreciate how you look out for Catherine.” He stated. Peter nodded. Then he ran from the chamber. Mary smiled happily then she also left the chamber.

Once everyone was gone Vincent addressed Father. “I know you don’t like me travelling but I have to go to her.” Father rose and smiled. “Of course you have to bring her and your unborn child home to us.” Vincent smiled and embraced him. “Thank you for understanding.” He whispered. Father patted his cheek. “I love Catherine and I could not be happier or more proud that we were wrong about you fathering a child.” Vincent smiled again. “No one is happier than I.” Father nodded. “Yes now go pack your bag and I will get you some medical supplies in case you need them.” With this Vincent raced out of the chamber.

As this was happening Catherine parked her car in front of Peter’s house. She sat there for a few minutes then got out of the car. She walked up the sidewalk to the front door. She reached out and rang the doorbell. Susan opened the door and smiled happily when she saw Catherine. “Oh Cathy come in here.” She insisted. Catherine smiled weakly then entered the house. “Is your dad here?” Catherine asked. Susan was about to answer when Peter entered the house again. He smiled when he saw Catherine. “Cathy honey I am so glad you are here.” He told her as he embraced her. She smiled sadly as he released her. “I could not go Peter I just can’t!” She told him adamantly. Peter smiled and cupped her cheek. “Well honey I for one am glad because there is something important that you need to know.” Susan smiled knowingly at her father. “Dad is everything all right?” She asked. He smiled at her and nodded. “Cathy everything you heard tonight was not exactly true.” He began. Catherine looked at him confused. “But Peter Vincent and Lisa were talking about their joining ceremony.” She argued. He smiled and shook his head. “Yes they were talking about a joining ceremony but not for Vincent and Lisa.” He stated. Susan smiled she knew that it had to be a very big mistake. “What are you talking about Peter?” Catherine asked confused. “Honey Lisa is having a joining ceremony but she is marrying Daniel not Vincent.” Catherine shook her head. “But Vincent was talking to her about it.” She argued. Peter nodded. “Yes he was helping with the plans and he lost track of the time that is why he never showed up at your place.” Catherine began to pace then.

She turned and looked at Peter. “I want to believe you but I am not sure.” Susan smiled and moved toward her. “Cathy before this had Vincent ever given you a reason to doubt his love?” She asked gently. Catherine smiled. “No I have doubted his love at times but they were all things that I created.” She stated. Susan smiled. “I never believed this was true even when Dad told me earlier I know how much he loves you.” Catherine sighed. “I am just not sure.” She whispered. Peter moved toward her and took her hand. “Honey I was going to come get my van to bring Vincent to the cabin to see you.” He admitted. Catherine looked up at him. She knew that she should be angry with him but she couldn’t. She smiled lovingly. “Thank you Peter.” She whispered. He smiled and lifted her chin. “Come below with us so you and Vincent can talk.” He requested. Catherine looked up at him. “I don’t know Peter I am still so confused.” Susan put her arm around Catherine’s shoulders. “Come on Cathy talk to him that way all your fears can be laid to rest for your sake and for the baby.”

Catherine looked up at Peter. “You told him about the baby didn’t you?” She asked in a whisper. Peter smiled slightly. “Honey I saw how hurt he was when I told him that you were gone I had to tell him.” Catherine nodded. “I don’t want him to come back to me out of obligation.” She whispered. Peter cupped her cheek. “Honey he was extremely happy that we were wrong and that you were carrying his child.” He assured her. She thought a moment then nodded. “I will go talk to him but I can’t go to his chamber right now.” She insisted. She knew that seeing the bed where they had made love that one glorious afternoon would be extremely hard for her especially if things did not work out for them. Peter nodded. “Well Mary knows what happened we can go to her chamber.” Catherine nodded in agreement then the three of them entered the secret passage leading to the tunnels.

A few minutes later they arrived at Mary’s chamber. She smiled brightly when she saw Catherine. “Oh dear child I am so glad you came back.” She told her as she hugged Catherine. Catherine smiled. “I came to talk to Vincent.” Mary smiled and cupped her cheek. “Yes you do have a lot to talk about.” Catherine nodded. Then she looked at Peter. “Why hasn’t he come yet he can sense when I am below?” Peter knew that Catherine was not aware of the bond being affected by the baby. He put his arm around her shoulder. “Honey he told me and Father earlier that he has been experiencing losses of the bond.” Catherine looked at him confused. “What do you mean?” She asked. Peter smiled. “Honey I think the bond is being interrupted by the presence of the baby.” She sighed. “Will he hate me or our child for that?” She asked in a whisper. Mary moved over and put her hand on Catherine’s shoulder. “He could never ever hate you or his child Catherine.” She assured the frightened younger woman. “Besides honey who says that after the baby comes that the bond won’t be restored to its normal function.” Peter stated. Catherine thought a moment. Then she looked at Peter. “Would you go to his chamber and ask him to come here?” Peter looked at Mary for her approval. She smiled and nodded in agreement. He then silently nodded and ran from the chamber.

After he had left Catherine sat down on the bed. “I am so scared.” She whispered. Mary and Susan both sat down beside her. “We know dear but I guarantee you that everything will be fine for you and that wonderful baby once you talk to Vincent.” Catherine smiled at her. “You know about the baby?” Mary smiled and nodded. “Yes I was in Father’s chamber when Peter told Vincent.” Catherine smiled again. “What do you think about it?” Mary cupped her cheek. “Catherine you are giving Vincent the one thing that he thought he could never have how could I feel anything but love for you or that child?” Catherine began to cry and embraced the older woman. She smiled and whispered. “I love you Mary.” Mary moved back and cupped her cheek. “And l love you dear child.” She then took Catherine in her arms and held her.

Meanwhile Vincent is in his chamber gathering his belongings. Father entered the chamber and smiled. “Well it looks as if a bomb went off in here.” He joked. Vincent looked up at him and slightly smiled. “I was not sure what to take or how much to take.” He reasoned. Father smiled and nodded. Then he handed Vincent the medical supplies. Vincent took them. “Thank you for understanding that I have to do this Father.” He whispered. Father smiled. “I will worry until you and Catherine have returned but I agree that you have to go and set things right between you.”

Vincent was about to speak again when Daniel and Lisa entered the chamber. Daniel smiled and put his bag on Vincent’s table. “I am ready.” He stated. Vincent smiled. “Daniel thank you again for offering to come along.” Daniel shook his head. “Hey this happened partly because of us so it is the least I can do.” Vincent smiled then sobered. “I can’t believe how I hurt and failed her tonight.” He whispered. Father was about to speak when Lisa shook her head. “Vincent you did not fail Catherine I should have never asked you to stay and help with the plans then you would have noticed the time and left promptly.” She stated.

They were quiet for a few seconds when Lisa smiled. “Think of it this way Vincent Catherine was going to give you a very special and wonderful gift tonight.” She mused. Vincent smiled and sat down on his bed. “I still can’t believe that she is carrying our child.” He whispered.

At that moment he cocked his head as if listening for something. Everyone in the chamber looked at him. “Vincent is everything all right?” Father asked concerned. Vincent stayed quiet for a few seconds then smiled. “Catherine is somewhere below.” He stated as he stood. Father smiled. “Do you know exactly where?” Vincent listened once again.

Then suddenly a voice interrupted his thoughts. “She is waiting to see you in Mary’s chamber.” Everyone turned to see Peter entering the chamber. Vincent moved over toward him. “How is she?” He asked. Peter smiled. “Susan and I finally convinced her to come below and talk to you.” He explained. “I thought she had left town?” Father asked confused. Peter smiled. “She was on her way out of the city when she decided to come back and fight for her and your baby’s future.” Vincent smiled. “That sounds more like my Catherine.” He remarked. Then without another word he ran from the chamber. Everyone smiled as they watched him go.

After he had gone Peter looked at Father. “Why don’t you and I go have some tea?” He asked. Father smiled and nodded. “Yes my nerves could use a cup of nice tea.” Father then looked at Daniel and Lisa. “Would the two of you like to join us?” He asked. The couple smiled and shook their heads. “No thank you Father we are going to spend some time together then I have to go retrieve my tools from the area around the abyss where I was working.” Daniel commented. Father smiled and nodded. “All right see you both later.” Then they all left the chamber.

Back in Mary’s chamber Catherine began to pace. Mary and Susan watched her then smiled at one another. “Cathy you need to relax.” Susan told her. Catherine smiled at her. “I am just so nervous.” She remarked. Mary rose from the bed and led Catherine back toward it. She smiled as Catherine sat down. “Why on earth should you be nervous Vincent loves you?” Mary asked. Catherine looked down at her hands. “I just don’t know how he is going to react to everything when we see one another.” She whispered.

At that moment Vincent entered the chamber. Susan and Mary saw him first. “Why don’t you ask him how he feels about everything yourself.” Mary stated. Catherine looked up at her then she followed Mary’s gaze and caught her first sight of Vincent that night. Mary then rose and approached Susan. “We will leave you two alone we will be in Father’s chamber if you need us.” Mary told them. Then they left the chamber.

Once they were gone Vincent moved over and sat beside her. “Catherine please forgive me for everything that happened tonight.” He requested. She looked up into his blue eyes and saw all the love that he had for her and their child. She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck. “I forgive you.” She whispered. Vincent wrapped his arms around her gently and held her as his tears began to fall. “I could not believe it when Peter told me that you had left.” He whispered. Catherine moved back and looked at him. “I am sorry about that I was not think clearly.” Vincent nodded. “Please Catherine don’t ever leave me like that again I don’t think I could take it.” He begged. She embraced him again and held him. “Neither could I that is why I had to come back I could not run away and give up on us or our dream.” Vincent smiled and suddenly pulled her over onto his lap. Catherine was shocked by this move. “What are you doing?” She asked surprised. He smiled slyly. “I want to be as close to you and our child as I can.” He whispered. Then he captured her lips in a very passionate kiss.

When they separated both of them was breathless. Vincent laid his forehead against hers. “Vincent Peter told me that our bond is changing.” Catherine finally commented. Vincent sighed and nodded. “Yes there are times when I cannot sense you.” He whispered. She looked at him concerned. “Why didn’t you tell me about this?” He sighed. “I was not sure what to do about it and I did not want to frighten you.” He told her. “Catherine with your work I cannot be sure now when you could be in danger.” He stated.

Then he saw the smile on her face. “What?” He asked. “Vincent you remember three weeks ago when I told you about Jenny?” She asked. Vincent nodded. He tightened his arms around her protectively at the thought of her losing their child. Catherine smiled at the gesture. “I know my love I thought of our baby too when Joe told me about them losing their baby.” She whispered. Vincent looked at her shocked. “You knew then?” He asked. She smiled again. “I had just found out that day at lunch.” She explained. “Then when Joe asked you to replace him that is why you refused?” Catherine nodded. “Yes in fact I resigned.” Vincent was totally shocked. “Why Catherine you were very good at your job.” He stated. She smiled and caressed his cheek. “When I found out that we were having this baby all I wanted to do was be a full time mother from that moment on.” She explained. Vincent smiled lovingly at her. “And you are going to be a wonderful mother.” He whispered. He then kissed her once again.

They kissed until someone behind them cleared their throat. Vincent looked over his shoulder and saw Daniel and Lisa. “Are we interrupting?” Daniel asked. Catherine and Vincent both smiled. “No of course not come in.” Catherine told them. Both smiled and entered the chamber. “We are so glad that you worked everything out.” Lisa stated. She then looked at Catherine. “I am so sorry about what you heard earlier.” Catherine smiled. “That is all right Lisa I misunderstood my hormones are running ramped since I became pregnant.” Vincent looked at her. “Catherine your reaction was perfectly normal.” He told her. She smiled at him lovingly.

After a few minutes Daniel and Lisa left the chamber. Vincent set Catherine down on the bed beside him. He then stood. “Catherine I want to ask you something.” He whispered. She looked up at him expectantly. He then knelt in front of her. “Would you move below so that we can raise our child together?” She smiled as tears began to come into her eyes. “Yes my love of course I will.” She whispered. Then they kissed once again.

This time after they parted Vincent stood once again. He smiled and extended his hand to her. “Come my love let us go and tell Father that you are moving below.” She smiled and took his hand. They walked out of the chamber arm in arm. When they reached Father’s chamber they found him there with Mary, Susan, and Peter. All of them smiled when the couple entered. “Father we came to tell you that Catherine will be moving below very soon so that we can raise our child together.” Father smiled happily. “That is wonderful news I could not be happier for both of you.” Peter and Susan rose and embraced the couple. “We wanted to see you before we left.” Peter told them. “We are very happy that all this has been worked out.” Susan added. Catherine smiled and put her arm around Vincent’s waist. “Thank you both for everything.” Peter and Susan both smiled then they left the tunnels.

Father smiled again. “Why don’t the two of you go somewhere and have a belated anniversary celebration?” He asked. Catherine and Vincent both smiled. “That is a wonderful idea.” Catherine told him. Vincent nodded. Then they left the chamber.

As they were walking down the tunnel Catherine smiled up at him. “We could go to the apartment.” She whispered. Vincent smiled and pulled her into his arms. “That is exactly what I had in mind.” He whispered seductively. Catherine smiled. “I will go up to Peter’s and then drive back to my building.” She told him. Vincent nodded. “I will unpack my things then meet you on the balcony in a half an hour.” Catherine nodded. “I will be waiting for you.” Vincent smiled and kissed her. “I love you my Catherine.” He whispered. She sighed in his arms. “And I love you.” She answered. Then they walked to the tunnel entrance at Peter’s house.

After Catherine had left Vincent went to his chamber and unpacked. Then he decided to go and talk to Father. “Father I would to ask you something.” He remarked as he entered. Father put down the ledger and smiled. “Yes of course Vincent.” He responded. Vincent smiled and sat down. “Father you told me a while back that if I ever wanted Margaret’s engagement ring for Catherine that you would give it to me.” He commented. Father smiled knowingly. “Yes son I did.” Vincent smiled. “Well I would like to take you up on your offer for the ring.” Father smiled again and rose. He walked over and pulled a small box out of his bureau. He then handed it to Vincent. “I am very happy that you are getting the life that I always wanted for you.” He whispered. Vincent rose and embraced him. “I could never have this life if not for Catherine.” He stated. Then Father watched as his special son left the chamber. He mused as he thought to himself. Vincent is going to realize his and Catherine’s destiny tonight. He then retired to his bedchamber for a good night’s rest.

Meanwhile Catherine returned home and unpacked. She then ran into the kitchen and put their dinner once again in the oven. She walked back into the living room and was about to sit down on the sofa when she looked out onto the balcony. She smiled and walked out into the night air. She turned back to look again into the apartment. Remembering the candles she walked back inside and lit them again.

As she was finishing the last candle Vincent stepped into the balcony doors. She looked up and smiled at him. “It was three years ago tonight.” She remarked as she slowly approached him. Vincent smiled and opened his arms. “Yes and I am thankful that I found you that night.” He responded. Catherine snuggled into his embrace. “Vincent you have changed my life in more ways than I can ever tell you.” She whispered. Then she lifted her head from his chest. “I love you more today than I ever thought possible.” Vincent smiled and cupped her cheek. “Catherine I am the one who is blessed to have you in my life.” He whispered. Then he gently kissed her.

As they parted she smiled. “I thought that our dream had come to an end earlier tonight.” She confided. Vincent sighed and held her a bit tighter. “Catherine our dream will never end and now that we are being blessed with this remarkable child that dream will last forever.” She smiled as her tears began to flow. “My love why are you crying?” He asked. “I am just so happy.” She whispered. “Three years ago my life was so boring and mundane then I met you and that all changed.” Vincent smiled and pulled her to him once again. “That night was one of the worst in your life but look what we both gained from it.” She leaned back and smiled. “We gained everything.” She whispered. Then they kissed once again.

This time when they parted Catherine smiled. “Come in let me take your cloak.” Vincent nodded and slipped it off his shoulders. Catherine took it from him and hung it over the chair in her bedroom. She then started to move away from him toward the living room. Suddenly Vincent reached out and wrapped his arms around her pulling her back against his chest. She smiled as he gently caressed her small tummy. She smiled at this gesture. “Catherine can our dinner wait a while longer?” He asked in a seductive whisper. She smiled. “Whatever for Vincent?” She asked. He chuckled slightly at her teasing. “Because the only thing I want right now is you my angel.” Then he softly began to kiss her neck. She moaned and moved her neck to give him better access. “I think dinner can wait.” She whispered. “Just let me go and put it on warm.” Vincent sighed and reluctantly released her. “Hurry back my love I want you.” She shivered at the tone in his voice. She walked out of the bedroom toward the kitchen.

When she returned to the bedroom she smiled. Vincent was sitting on the bed. He had removed his boots and socks. “I am back my love.” She whispered. Vincent smiled and stood. “Come my love I need you.” He then extended his hand. She shook her head. “No Vincent I want to make love in front of the fireplace.” She whispered. Vincent smiled. “That could be very romantic.” He stated. She smiled and nodded. Then she moved over and took the coverlet off the bed. Vincent took it from her and smiled. “I will go and spread this out.” He told her. She smiled and nodded. “I will be out in a few moments.” He smiled then left the bedroom.

Once he was gone Catherine smiled to herself. She looked in her closet and pulled out the Victoria’s Secret box that she had hidden there. Opening the box she pulled out the beautiful ivory colored gown. She had bought this a while back for this night. She knew that Vincent would love it. “Catherine are you all right?” Vincent asked from the living room. “Yes love I will be out in a few minutes.” She responded. Then she quickly changed into the gown.

Once she was changed she moved toward the bedroom door. She quietly opened it and stepped into the living room. She smiled when she saw Vincent on one knee rekindling the fire. He had removed his tunic and his shirt and was bare to the waist. He is the most gorgeous man I have ever seen. Catherine thought to herself. She was brought out of her thoughts when she felt Vincent’s arms come around her. “You look so beautiful my angel.” He whispered as he once again began kissing her. She smiled against his lips. Then she moved back. “Thank you darling I wanted to wear something special for you tonight.” Vincent smiled slyly. “Well my love you look exquisite but I guarantee that you are not going to be wearing this beautiful gown for very long.” He whispered seductively. She smiled again. “I should hope not.” She answered. Then he kissed her again.

When they parted Vincent trailed soft kisses down her neck. Catherine lifted her neck to allow him more access to her soft skin. She moaned as his hands moved over her entire body. “I have never wanted you more than I do at this moment.” Vincent whispered in her ear. She smiled. “I want you too.” She moaned. Vincent gently lifted his hand to the strap of her gown. He pulled it off her shoulder and kissed her shoulder where it had lain. Then he lowered the other strap. Catherine shivered as the silky gown slid down her body and pooled at her feet.

She stepped out of it and moved forward. Vincent took her in his arms and held her. “You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.” He whispered. She smiled and began to trail soft kissed down his jawline and neck. Vincent moaned softly. “Oh Catherine I need you so much.” He whispered. She smiled to herself. She knew how she was affecting him. “I need you too Vincent.” She told him. Vincent then removed the remainder of his clothes. He then lowered her to the coverlet. She lay down and opened her arms and smiled. “Come to me my love.” Vincent smiled and lay down beside her. “Catherine I have never loved anyone as much as I love you.” He whispered as he began to caress her. She moaned softly as his hands were softly moving over her sensitized skin. “Please Vincent make love to me now!” She cried out as his hands gently caressed her hidden treasures. Vincent smiled and leaned over her. “Not yet my angel I want to savor this moment.” He whispered.

Catherine could not believe how Vincent was making her feel. He began kissing her neck again as she lay beneath him. She shivered as he moved down toward her chest. When he reached the swell of her breasts he gently kissed the turgid peaks of her nipples. Then he took one into his mouth. Catherine moaned and began to writhe under him as he sucked and licked her. “Oh Vincent yes!” She cried out. Vincent then moved to the other nipple doing the same as he had to the other. Catherine felt like she was on fire. Vincent was doing things to her that she could not believe. She shivered when she felt his hand slip down her body. “Do you want me to touch you Catherine?” He asked in a low seductive tone. All she could do was nod as his hands caressed her soft skin. Vincent smiled as he moved his hand down to the soft area of her womanhood. Catherine moaned as he gently pushed her legs apart. “Do you want me to touch you here my angel?” Vincent asked as her gently stroked her with one finger. She shivered involuntarily at his actions. “Yes Vincent please touch me!” She begged finally finding her voice. Vincent chuckled low in his chest. “Are you getting impatient my love?” She opened her eyes and smiled. “I am always impatient when it comes to you.” She answered.

Vincent shifted slightly as he looked deeply into her eyes. Then before Catherine could say anything he entered her with two fingers. Catherine’s breath caught in her throat as he stroked her. “Oh Vincent yes please!” She cried. She began to move her hips in cadence with the rhythm of his fingers. Vincent took her nipple in his mouth once again and suckled her as he continued his ministrations. Catherine thrashed her head back and forth as he pleasured her. Suddenly he removed his fingers. She opened her eyes and looked at him. “No Vincent Don’t stop I need you.” She whispered. Vincent smiled and leaned up toward her. “Don’t worry my soft little angel I am not done.” Then he kissed her.

When he broke the kiss he sat up on his haunches. Catherine smiled up at him and gently caressed his chest. “What are you up to Vincent?” She asked smiling. He smiled at her and chuckled. “You will see my Catherine.” He whispered. He then leaned forward and gently kissed her stomach. “Your father loves you little one.” He whispered to their child. Catherine smiled as tears came to her eyes at his words. “You are going to be a wonderful Father.” She whispered. Vincent smiled. “And you are going to be an exquisite mother.” He responded. Vincent then smiled. “Now my love where was I?” He asked. She giggled. “I am sure I don’t know Vincent.” She responded. Vincent then smiled again. “Ah yes I remember now.” He told her seductively. Then he leaned forward and thrust his tongue deep inside of her. She moaned as her passion began to rise. “Oh Vincent you don’t know what you do to me!” She cried out. Vincent loved that he was making her so happy. He increased his actions making Catherine even more vocal. “Yes oh God yes love me with your mouth!” She screamed.

Vincent waited until she was about to fall over the edge. Then he moved back from her. Catherine whimpered as she felt him leave her. “No Vincent please don’t leave me I need you!” She cried. Vincent leaned over her and cupped her cheek. “Catherine open your eyes and look at me please.” He requested. She slowly opened her eyes and smiled into two dark pools of pure love and passion. “Catherine I will never leave you.” He whispered. “We are one now and our child is the proof of that.” He then kissed her. She smiled and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. “You have no idea how much I love you.” She told him. Vincent smiled. “And how much is that?” He asked. She smiled. “I have never loved any man as deeply and passionately as I love you.” She told him. Then she kissed him.

As they parted from their kiss Vincent smiled. “So my little vixen are you ready to receive me?” He asked. He then touched her womanhood. He smiled when he felt the moisture there. “Yes it would seem that you are ready.” He whispered. Then without another word he thrust into her. Catherine moaned and wrapped her legs around him. They moved together kissing and touching one another. Then suddenly their orgasms hit. Vincent kissed her hard to drown out her scream and his roar.

Later that night Catherine awoke and smiled when she saw Vincent smiling and gently caressing her stomach. He then noticed that she was awake. He smiled and removed his hand. She grabbed it again and placed it back on her stomach. “I did not mean to wake you.” He whispered as he leaned forward and kissed her. She smiled happily. “I am so happy that you are excited about our baby you are going to be a wonderful father.” Vincent smiled. “Catherine after father and Peter told me that I probably would never father a child I was so devastated.” She smiled. “I know my love so was I.” He touched her cheek. “Then when you told me that you thought I did not want you to be the mother of my child I felt that I was robbing you of this gift.” He whispered. She touched his cheek. “Well my love we no longer have to worry about that.” He nodded. “Yes we are going to have a wonderful child.”

Suddenly Vincent rose from their makeshift bed. Catherine rose onto one elbow watching him. “Vincent are you all right?” She asked concerned. He smiled at her. “Yes my angel I just need to get something out of my pouch.” He then disappeared into the bedroom. He took the pouch out of the pocket of his cloak. Opening it he retrieved the small ring box. He smiled as he held it. This was the moment that they had both dreamed would happen.

Then he returned to the living room. Catherine smiled as he lay back down beside her. “Where did you go?” She asked as she snuggled up next to him. Vincent smiled. “I had to get this from my cloak.” He whispered. He then handed the ring box to her. Catherine sat up and took the box from him. “What is it Vincent?” She asked. Vincent smiled. “Open it and find out.” She took a deep breath and slowly opened the lid of the small box. She stared at the beautiful diamond ring that lay nestled in the velvet. Vincent sat up and took the box from her. “I asked Father for this tonight.” He whispered. Catherine lifted her head and looked into his blue eyes. Vincent smiled and took her left hand in his. “Catherine I have very little to offer you but my love and devotion but if that is enough for you and our child I would be very honored if you would be my wife.” He whispered.

Catherine sat there for a few seconds speechless. Then she looked back up into his blue eyes. “Oh yes Vincent I will marry you whenever you want!” She cried. Vincent smiled and placed the ring on her finger. Then he gently kissed her hand. “I will love and take care of you and our child until my last breath.” He whispered reverently. He then wrapped his arms around Catherine and held her as she cried. “I love you more than I ever thought possible.” She whispered. Vincent smiled. “As I love you my Catherine.”

After a few moments Catherine smiled. “I don’t know about you but your child and I are starving.” Vincent smiled and rose. “We can’t have the two of you hungry now can we?” He asked. He then pulled her to her feet. She smiled and put her arm around him. “Come on let’s go finish dinner.” She commented. Once dinner was over Vincent rose and moved around the table beside Catherine. He smiled down at Catherine. “What are you thinking?” She asked. Vincent smiled then suddenly scooped her up in his arms. “I want you again.” He whispered. Catherine giggled. “You are incorrigible you know that.” She stated. Vincent chuckled. “Yes I am but only for you.” He then captured her lips in a very passionate kiss.

When they parted both of them were breathless. “Now my angel I am going to make love to you again.” He told her. Catherine smiled and snuggled into his arms. “Yes my love make love to me again.” She whispered. He then carried her back to their makeshift bed in front of the fireplace where they once again became lost in their passion for one another.

The next evening Vincent Catherine returned to the tunnels with some of her belongings. They walked into Father’s chamber and found him there with most of the tunnel inhabitants. Vincent and Catherine immediately knew that something was very wrong. “What has happened?” Vincent asked as he walked over and knelt in front of Father’s chair. Father looked at him sadly. “Vincent something tragic has happened.” He whispered. Vincent put his hand on Father’s. “Tell me.” He requested. Father took a deep breath then spoke again. “Last night after the two of you left Daniel went to the area around the abyss to retrieve his tools.” He began. “He was about to return when he lost his footing and fell into the abyss.” Catherine gasped and put her hand over her mouth. Mary moved over and put her arm around Catherine’s shoulders. Vincent looked up at his parent. “How is Lisa?” He asked. Father shook his head. “She is devastated I had to tell her when I was informed.” He stated. “Where is she Father?” Catherine asked. Father looked up at her. “She is in her chamber packing.” Vincent looked at him. “She is packing?” Father nodded. “She has decided to go to Paris.” He explained. Vincent rose to his feet. “I have to go talk to her.” He stated. Then he felt a hand on his arm. “No Vincent we have to go talk to her.” Catherine stated. Vincent smiled at her. He loved her so much that he was constantly amazed by her strength. “Yes we have to go talk to her.” He corrected. Then they left the chamber.

When they arrived at Lisa’s chamber they entered and found her sitting on the bed crying. “Lisa may Catherine and I come in?” Vincent asked quietly. Lisa lifts her head from her hands. “Oh God Vincent I’ve lost him!” She sobbed as she rose and ran into his arms. “Shh it will be all right in time.” He crooned. He looked over and saw the tears in Catherine’s eyes. “Come let’s sit down.” Vincent whispered as he led Lisa back into her chamber. Catherine followed and they all sat down. “Vincent Catherine the two of you are very luck to have one another never take that for granted.” Lisa told them. Catherine smiled and touched her arm. “We won’t.” She stated. Lisa smiled at her. “Do you have to leave?” Vincent asked. Lisa looked at him and nodded. “I can’t stay here where Daniel and I were planning to spend the rest of our lives and have a family.” She explained. “Where will you go?” Catherine asked. Lisa looked at her and smiled. “I have contacted some of my friends in Paris they want me to come stay with them for a while.” She explained. She then noticed the ring on Catherine’s finger. “Am I to presume that congratulations are in order?” She asked smiling. Catherine smiled and extended her hand. “Vincent proposed to me last night.” She stated. Lisa rose and hugged Catherine. Then she hugged Vincent. “You are both very lucky I am very happy for you both.” She then grabbed her suitcase. “Well I have a plane to catch.” She commented. Vincent rose from the bed and stood beside her. “You will keep in touch won’t you?” He asked. Lisa smiled and nodded. “Yes I want to find out how the two of you and that baby are doing.” She told them. She then embraced them once again and quickly left the chamber.

After she was gone Vincent sat back down on the bed. Catherine moved from the chair she was sitting in and sat down next to him. “She just needs time to heal.” She whispered. Vincent nodded. “I know I was just happy to have my friend back.” Catherine smiled. “I know you were sweetheart maybe she will return in time.” Vincent sighed and shook his head. “No she won’t come back.” He whispered. Catherine wrapped her arms around him and held him as he cried over the death of his friend and the departure of another.

A month and a half after Daniel’s death Catherine was standing in the guest chamber preparing for her wedding to Vincent. “Are you ready?” A female voice asked from the entrance of the chamber. Catherine turned and smiled when she saw Jenny and Mary entering the chamber. “Yes I am almost ready.” She told them. “My dear you look beautiful.” Mary commented. Catherine smiled and looked down at her dress. “Peter had my mother’s wedding dress brought out of storage.” Jenny smiled. “I was not aware that you even knew where her dress was.” Catherine nodded. “Yes daddy always told me that she wanted me to wear it when I married.” Mary could see the hint of sadness in her eyes. “Catherine I know they are both looking down on you today and smiling.” Catherine smiled and nodded. “Yes Mary I believe that they are my mother always wanted me to have a happy life and I believe this is what she meant.” Then she smoothed the dress. “Now tell me the truth do I look too fat?” She asked. Mary and Jenny smiled at one another. “Don’t be silly Cathy you look beautiful Vincent is going to be mesmerized.” Mary nodded. “Yes he will.” She agreed. Then she smiled and handed Catherine a small box. Catherine took it and looked at Mary. “What is this?” She asked. Mary smiled. “My mother gave this to me the day I married my husband and I always said that if I had a daughter I would give it to her.” She explained. Catherine smiled and opened the small box. She gasped when she saw the beautiful pearl earrings. “Oh Mary they are exquisite.” Catherine whispered. Then she looked at the older woman. “Are you sure you want me to have them?” Mary smiled and cupped her cheek. “I could not ask for a better person to have them.” She stated. Then she embraced Catherine. “I love you Mary.” Catherine whispered as they parted. “And I love you dear now let’s finish getting you ready.” Mary remarked.

In Vincent’s chamber he was getting ready with Devin and Joe. “I am so glad that you came home.” Vincent told his brother. Devin smiled and put his hand on Vincent’s shoulder. “I would not have missed your wedding for anything.” Joe smiled. “Neither would Jenny and I when we found out we came back immediately.” Vincent looked at his friend. “How are the two of you coping?” He asked. Joe smiled. “I have never seen anyone stronger than my beautiful wife.” He commented. “We have even been talking about trying to have another child.” Vincent smiled. “That is wonderful my friend.” Then Father and Peter entered the chamber. “So are you ready?” Peter asked. Vincent smiled and nodded. “I have never been more ready for something in my life.” Peter smiled again and nodded. “Is Catherine ready?” Joe asked. Father smiled proudly. “Yes they have gone to their positions in the great hall.” Vincent smiled. “Well then I suppose we should also leave.” He stated. Then they all left the chamber.

A short time later Father, Vincent, Joe, and Devin walked into the great hall and took their positions. Everyone smiled and talked about how happy Vincent looked. Suddenly the music began. Everyone turned and smiled when Jamie entered the hall. She looked beautiful in the white dress that she wore. Father and Vincent both smiled as she took her position. They marveled at what a beautiful young woman she had grown to be. Then they looked at the entrance again and smiled when Jenny came down the steps. She smiled happily when she saw Joe standing beside Devin. He smiled in return and winked at her. Vincent looked back over his shoulder and smiled at his friend. He knew how in love they were.

When Jenny took her position the music changed and everyone gasped when Catherine and Peter entered the chamber. Vincent was stunned at how beautiful she looked. He smiled as she walked toward him. She seemed to be floating. As they reached the altar Peter smiled and placed Catherine’s hand in Vincent’s. He kissed her cheek. Then moved back to his seat beside Mary. Vincent and Catherine smiled at each other then they turned toward Father. He smiled at both of them then began to speak. “Dearly beloved we have come here today to witness the joining of Vincent and Catherine their love has seen many trials and tribulations but they have withstood them and come through them to be here today to join their lives.” He then looked at Vincent. “Vincent do you take Catherine as your wife?” Vincent looked at Catherine and smiled. “Yes I do.” He stated proudly. Father then looked at Catherine. “And Catherine do you take Vincent to be your husband?” She smiled as her tears began to fall. “Yes with all my heart.” She stated. Father then looked at Vincent again. “Do you have a ring for Catherine?” Vincent nodded then turned toward Devin. He took the ring and turned back toward Catherine. “This ring I give you as a token of my love and devotion.” He stated as he placed it on her finger. Catherine turned and took her father’s wedding ring from Jenny. “Vincent this was my father’s ring I give it you as a token of my love and devotion.” She told him emotionally.

Once they had exchanged rings Vincent and Catherine once again faced Father. “Now that you have exchanged rings and promises of love I am very proud to announce that you are man and wife.” Father told them. He then smiled. “Vincent would you please kiss your wife?” He asked. Vincent smiled. “It would be my honor.” He stated. Then he pulled Catherine into his arms and captured her lips in a sweet and passionate kiss.

As they parted Vincent smiled at his beautiful wife. “I love you so much.” He whispered. Catherine smiled as the tears came to her eyes. “I love you too.” Then he took her hand and led her down the aisle as the wedding party followed. A few minutes later everyone approached the great hall. Vincent was about to move toward the great door when Devin smiled and shook his head. “Not tonight little brother you stay with your wife.” Then he along with a few other tunnel men moved forward and opened the door. Vincent smiled down at Catherine. Then he led her into the great hall.

As the lights came up Catherine gasped. “Oh Vincent this is so beautiful.” She whispered. He smiled and nodded. “Yes it is Mary and the others really outdid themselves.” He then led her to the table that was designated for them. Once everyone was in the hall the musicians picked up their instruments. Vincent smiled and stood. “May I have this dance Mrs. Wells?” He asked as he extended his hand. Catherine smiled and rose. “Of course I would love to dance.” She told him. Father and Peter smiled as they watched the couple walk onto the dance floor. “I was so afraid that I would never see them this happy again.” Peter remarked. Father nodded. “So was I especially after that horrible mix up on their anniversary.” Peter nodded. “Yes I thought it was the end for them.” He remarked. Father sighed. “I am just thankful that it worked out now Catherine is here and she will be having their baby here.” Peter smiled. “That is another thing that I am glad we were wrong about.” He stated. “I think that their child is one of the luckiest children.” Father smiled. “Yes that child is going to be very lucky.” Then they watched as Vincent and Catherine continued to dance.

At the end of the dance Vincent pulled Catherine closer. “I love you Catherine.” He whispered. Catherine smiled up at him. “And I absolutely adore you.” She answered as they came together in a passionate kiss. When they parted Catherine smiled into his blue eyes. They had forgotten that anyone was even there with them until they heard the cheers. Catherine looked around suddenly. She then looked at Vincent and started to giggle. She buried her face in his chest. “They are happy for us Catherine.” He whispered as he held her.

Later in the evening everyone gathered around as William brought in the wedding cake. Vincent and Catherine cut the cake and took turns feeding it to one another. Then they returned to the dance floor for another dance. Everyone was so happy for his or her favorite couple. They could see the love between Vincent and Catherine as they held one another on the dance floor. When they saw that the reception was beginning to break up Vincent stood and smiled at his wife. “Shall we leave now?” Catherine smiled and rose. “Yes my love.” She whispered.

They were almost at the chamber entrance when they were spotted. They smiled as everyone turned and showered them with rose petals. Vincent then happily scooped his bride up into his arms and ran from the great hall as everyone watched and cheered.

Once they were at a safe distance Vincent put Catherine down on her feet again. “Now my angel for your next surprise.” He whispered. Catherine looked up at him and smiled. “What are you up to?” She asked smiling. Vincent smiled and shook his head. “I am not talking so you will just have to wait and see.” He stated. She then pouted. “But you know I can’t stand surprises.” Vincent smiled as he stopped walking and pulled her into his arms. “Yes I know that you are very impatient but please just go along with me on this.” He requested. Catherine looked up at him and smiled. “I will go along with you on anything.” She whispered. Then they kissed once again.

After a few minutes they reached a distant chamber. Catherine smiled at Vincent. “Why are we coming here?” She asked. Vincent smiled and put his arm around her. “This is part of your surprise.” He told her. Then he led her into the chamber. Catherine looked around and smiled. “This is so beautiful.” She whispered. Vincent smiled and pulled her into his arms. “Do you like our new chamber?” He asked. Catherine looked up at him. “Our new chamber?” She asked confused. Vincent smiled and nodded. “Yes with our little one on the way I thought that a bigger chamber would be appropriate.” Catherine smiled. “You are the most wonderful man I have ever met.” She told him. Vincent smiled. “Does that mean you approve?” He asked. Catherine wrapped her arms around his waist. “I not only approve I love it more than you could ever know.”

Vincent suddenly lifted Catherine into his arms. “What are you doing now?” She asked with a giggle. Vincent kissed her as he walked across the chamber. “I want to make love to my wife.” He whispered. Catherine smiled. “I would love that.” She told him. That night they shared their burning passion for one another. Vincent discovered that Catherine needed him as much as he needed her. And they reveled in their love for one another.

The next morning Catherine awoke and found Vincent watching her sleep. “How long have you been awake?” She asked as she turned over and snuggled closer to him. Vincent smiled and tightened his arms around her. “Not long.” He whispered. Catherine sighed. “I have never been happier than I am at this moment.” Vincent smiled and gently touched her stomach. “And we have much too look forward to in our future.” Catherine smiled. “Yes we do.” She stated. They lay there for the rest of the morning talking about their future and their child.

As time went on Vincent and Catherine settled into their wonderful life below. Catherine spent her days helping Mary with the children and spending time with Vincent. He doted on her shamelessly. Everyone thought that it was very touching seeing the great love between the two of them.

Then one afternoon during Catherine’s sixth month of pregnancy Father entered their chamber. “Vincent may I come in? He asked. Vincent and Catherine looked up from the book that they were reading and smiled. “Of course Father is there a problem?” Father smiled and sat down. “I am afraid that you are going to be needed on a repair job today.” Vincent sighed. “But I was hoping to spend the day with Catherine.” She smiled and touched Vincent’s cheek. “Darling I am sure that Father would not ask if it were not important.” She told him. “Besides Jenny sent me an invitation last night in her note to come above and have lunch.” Vincent looked at her. “Are you certain that you should with you so far along?” She smiled then looked at Father. “What do you think?” She asked. Father smiled. “Vincent Catherine is coming along wonderfully in her pregnancy I don’t see what going above to have lunch with Jenny would hurt.” He stated. Vincent smiled and looked at his wife. “Well if Father is sure.” He commented. Catherine smiled and hugged him. “I will miss you but when you get home I will be here waiting.” Vincent smiled again. “Promise me that you will take great care of yourself and our baby.” He pleaded. Catherine cupped his cheek. “You know I will.” She whispered. Then she kissed him. Father smiled and rose from the chair he was sitting in. “Well I will go inform the men that you will join them shortly.” Vincent and Catherine broke their kiss and blushed when they realized that Father was still in the chamber. “Yes I will escort Catherine to the park entrance then join them.” Father smiled again then left the chamber.

A few minutes later they were ready to leave. Vincent took Catherine’s hand and led her from the chamber. She smiled as he led her down the tunnels toward the park entrance. When they arrived She smiled and walked into his arms. “I will be careful.” She whispered. Vincent tightened his arms around her as much as he could. “I know and I am glad that you are going to see Jenny please tell her that she and Joe should come below again soon.” Catherine smiled and looked up at him. “Yes I will tell them.” She then put her arms around his neck. “I love you.” She whispered. Vincent smiled and lowered his head. “I love you too.” He answered as their lips came together in a passionate kiss.

After a few moments they parted. Then with one last hug and gentle kiss Catherine opened the secret door and left the tunnels to meet with Jenny. Vincent stood there for a few moments after she had left. He closed his eyes and prayed that Catherine and their child would be safe and return to him soon. He turned and started down the tunnel as a message came over the pipes that let him know that the work crew was waiting for him to join them. He would worry about Catherine until he saw her once again but he knew that he had a job to do and that the crew was counting on him.

Catherine entered Mario’s restaurant and smiled when she spotted Jenny. “Hey Jen.” She called out. Jenny turned around and smiled as she moved toward Catherine. “Cath I am so glad that I got your message that you could have lunch.” Then she embraced her friend. “You look terrific.” Catherine smiled as they parted. “Vincent always tells me that.” Jenny giggled. “Well he is madly in love with you and you are carrying his child would you expect anything different?” Catherine smiled and shook her head. “No he is one of the best parts of my life.” Jenny smiled. “Man you really do have it bad.” She teased. Catherine smiled and shook her head. “Face it Cathy I have never heard you speak with such love and reverence about a man since I have known you.” Catherine nodded. “I have never known a man like Vincent in my life.”

They were suddenly approached by a maitre’d. “May I seat you ladies?” He asked. Catherine and Jenny smiled. “Yes we have a reservation under the name Maxwell.” Jenny told him. The man checked the book then smiled. “Yes Mrs. Maxwell please follow me to your table.” Jenny and Catherine smiled and followed him to a table toward the back of the restaurant.

Once they were seated he took their drink orders and handed them their menus then he left. “So how is that little one?” Jenny asked. Catherine smiled. “Father and Peter both told me yesterday that we are both doing wonderfully.” Jenny smiled. “And you look absolutely radiant I think being pregnant agrees with you.” Catherine smiled shyly. “That is something that I never thought I would hear.” Jenny touched her hand. “I know that when you thought that Vincent and you could not have children it was very heartbreaking.” Catherine nodded. “Yes but this little miracle has erased all that pain.” She stated as she gently touched her stomach.

Catherine was about to speak again when she looked across the restaurant and saw Stephen Bass entering the restaurant with a group of men. Jenny noticed the look on her face and turned to see what she was staring at. “Oh my God I can’t believe that he is out of the hospital.” Jenny remarked. Catherine looked at her friend and nodded. “Jenny would you call Joe and have him come to the restaurant?” Jenny looked at her. “Yes I think he needs to know that that maniac is on the streets again.” Jenny opened her purse and took out her cell phone. She quickly dialed Joe’s office number. “Joe honey could you come to Mario’s as soon as possible?” She asked. “What has happened is Cathy and the baby all right?” He asked urgently. “Yes but there is something here that you need to be aware of so please hurry.” Then they hung up. Jenny touched Catherine’s hand. “Joe is on his way.” She whispered. Catherine looked at her and nodded as she watched Stephen across the room.

A few minutes later Joe hurried into the restaurant and walked toward them. “What has happened?” He asked as he hugged Jenny. “Joe look over there.” Catherine whispered. Joe followed her gaze and gasped. “Oh my God what is he doing out?” He asked angrily. Catherine shook her head. “I don’t know but it frightens me.” She stated. Jenny rose. “Come on Cathy we are getting you out of here.” Catherine nodded then she rose.

They were about to move away from the table when Stephen approached them. “Cathy honey it is wonderful to see you.” Catherine sat back down she did not want him to see her protruding stomach. She was afraid of what he would do if he found out that she was pregnant. Joe turned around and looked at Stephen. “Bass you leave her the hell alone!” He warned. Stephen looked at him and smiled. “I can talk to whomever I please Mr. Maxwell I am no longer in the custody of the hospital.” Catherine looked up at him. “How long have you been out?” She asked. Stephen smiled at her. “I got out late last year they found that I was competent to take care of myself once again.” Catherine nodded. “Well I hope you have a wonderful life.” She told him. He smiled. “I will if you are a part of that life.” Catherine sighed and shook her head. “Stephen there is no possibility of us getting back together.” He shook his head. “Oh Cathy don’t worry I forgive you for having me put in that hospital I know that you were looking out for me after all.” Catherine nodded. “I wanted you to get the help you needed.” She whispered.

Jenny could see how uncomfortable Catherine was becoming. She cleared her throat and rose from her seat. “Well we really should be going.” Catherine looked at her. She knew that Stephen would have to know about her baby sooner or later so she rose from the chair. Stephen opened his mouth to speak when he saw her bulging stomach. “What in the world is going on Catherine?” He asked angrily. Catherine looked up at him. “I am pregnant.” She stated. Stephen nodded. “That is obvious who have you been sleeping with while I was locked in that hospital?” He asked the anger apparent in his tone. Catherine suddenly became angry. “Stephen my personal life is my business!” She stated bitterly. “Besides I think you should know that I am a very happily married woman and that my husband and I are happily anticipating the birth of our first child.” She smiled as she touched her stomach. She then turned toward Joe and Jenny. “Shall we go I have to get home.” They smiled and then the three of them left the restaurant. Once they were gone Stephen walked back over to his table. He made his excuses to his business partners then left the restaurant. He had to go home and decide how he was going to win Catherine back from this new man in her life.

After they had left the restaurant Jenny, Joe, and Catherine decided that they all needed to go below and talk to Vincent. “I know that he will be waiting at the park entrance.” Catherine told them as they walked toward the drainage tunnel. “He felt your anger?” Jenny asked. Catherine smiled. “Yes I am sure he did since the pregnancy has advanced our bond has become strong once again and now it is stronger in me as well.”

When they entered the drainage tunnel Catherine walked over and pushed the secret lever. The three of them watched as the door slid open. They were not surprised when Vincent stepped out of the tunnel. “Catherine my love are you and the baby all right?” He asked urgently. Catherine’s tears began to fall and she ran into his arms. “Hold me please Vincent!” She begged. Vincent was very concerned. He tightened his arms around her as far as they would go then looked at their friends. “Vincent I think that we should all go talk to Father about this.” Joe suggested. Vincent nodded. Then he gently picked Catherine up. “Come my love you and our baby are safe at home now.” He whispered. Then they entered the tunnel and closed the secret door.

A few minutes later they entered Father’s study. He and Mary looked up and smiled when they saw Joe and Jenny. Father was about to greet them when he saw Vincent enter the chamber with a very distraught Catherine in his arms. He rose quickly from his chair. “My God has something happened to the baby?” He asked. Then he looks apologetically at Jenny and Joe knowing that the loss of their child was still very painful for them. Both understand his concern and nod in total understanding.

Vincent gently sat down in his favorite chair with Catherine on his lap. “Catherine can you tell me what has happened?” He asked gently. Catherine lifted her head off his shoulder and looked at him. “While Jenny and I were at the restaurant we saw Stephen.” Vincent looked at her confused for a moment. Then he suddenly knew whom she was talking about. “Stephen Bass?” He asked. Catherine nodded. “Yes.” She whispered. Vincent looked over at Joe. “I thought he was still in the hospital.” Joe nodded. “So did I but he said that his doctors thought that he was well.” Vincent looked at Catherine again. “You spoke to him?” He asked. She nodded. “As we were leaving he walked up and started a conversation.” She stated. Vincent tightened his arms around her. “Catherine please don’t go above anymore especially until the baby is born.” He requested. Catherine nodded in agreement. “The only place above that I will go is to finish cleaning out the apartment.” She promised. Vincent nodded. “Yes and I will be accompanying you on these trips.” He remarked. Then he looked at Father. “If I am unavailable please have someone else go with her.” Father nodded. “Yes of course my son.” Vincent rose from his seat with Catherine in his arms. “You and the baby both need your rest.” He told her. She smiled and laid her head on his shoulder. Vincent turned and spoke to Jenny and Joe. “Thank you both for coming with her.” They both smiled and rose. “We wanted to tell you what happened.” Joe stated. “Let me know if I can do anything to help.” He added. As they are about to leave Joe turned back and looked at Catherine. “Cathy if someone below can’t be with you at your apartment give me a call and I will come.” Both she and Vincent smiled. “Thank you Joe we appreciate that.” Catherine whispered. Then Jenny and Joe left the tunnels.

Once they were gone Vincent looked at Father. “Please see that no one disturbs us.” Father smiled and nodded. “Yes of course now go get some rest.” He told Catherine. She lifted her head again and smiled. “Thank you Father.” She answered. Then they left the chamber. They spent the rest of the evening together in their chamber then at the Great Falls. Catherine soon let the tension of the day go and enjoyed her time with her husband.

That night as they lay in bed together Vincent caressed Catherine’s cheek. “I was so frightened when I saw you this afternoon.” Catherine smiled and nodded. “I know darling I was frightened also.” Vincent sighed. “I can’t believe that they released him.” Catherine rose onto her elbow and looked at him. “Vincent we are fine and I am not going to see Stephen again please don’t worry about it anymore.” She requested. Vincent smiled and pulled her back down into his arms. “I will try not to worry but with you and our baby I find it hard not to.” They fell asleep that night holding one another tightly.

As the weeks went on Catherine remained below. The only times that she ventured above were at night to the park with Vincent. They had begun to get their lives back on track. Then one day Catherine walked into Father’s chamber. “Catherine dear what are you doing today?” The tunnel elder asked as she sat down. Catherine smiled and poured herself some tea. “I was planning to go to my old apartment and get things finished.” Father looked up at her. “Dear is that wise I know that Vincent is not able to go with you.” Catherine nodded. “Father I think it is the perfect time Vincent is working below in the lower tunnels I can get someone to go with me.” Father sighed and shook his head. “There is no one available to go with you today everyone is extremely busy since the work crew had to leave so suddenly after the pipe breakage.” He explained. Catherine thought a moment. Then she rose from her chair. “Well I will call Joe and Jenny to come keep me company.” She stated as she kissed him. “Promise me you will be very careful.” Father requested. Catherine smiled. “Of course I will but Joe has not seen or heard from Stephen so I believe that he has given up.” Father shook his head. “Even if he has I want you to take every precaution.” She nodded. “Of course I will be back before Vincent returns.” She promised. Then she left the tunnels heading above.

She arrived a short time later at the apartment. Opening the door she stepped inside. She locked the door once again then walked over to the phone. Picking it up she quickly dialed Joe and Jenny’s number. She listened as the phone rang. Then she got their answering machine. “Hey Joe it’s Cathy I am at my old apartment cleaning it out would you come over when you get this message I had to come alone everyone below was very busy.” She then said hung up the phone. After that she decided to get to work. She moved into the bedroom and began to get her remaining things together.

Meanwhile out in front of the building a cab pulled up to the curb. Stephen smiled as he got out and paid the driver. He was determined to see Catherine and find out just whom she was married to. He walked up the steps and entered the lobby. Then he boarded the elevator and headed for the 18th floor. Catherine was working in the bedroom when she suddenly heard a knock at the door. She smiled as she moved into the living room. “Hey Joe thanks for coming.” She commented as she unlocked the door. But she was suddenly shocked to see Stephen. “What are you doing here?” She asked. He smiled lovingly at her. “I thought I would come see how my lady love was doing.” He stated. He then looked beyond her into the apartment. “May I come in?” He asked. Catherine sighed and shook her head. “No Stephen I am just about to leave.” He smiled and moved past her into the apartment ignoring her protests. “No Stephen I told you I am just about too leave to meet with my husband.” Stephen smiled as he sat down on a crate. “Come on Cathy we both know that you made that up.” He commented. “You got pregnant by someone and to save yourself the embarrassment of admitting it was a one night stand you told everyone that you were married to some secret man.” Catherine glared at him. “I assure you my husband is very real and in a few months our child will be here.” Stephen looked at her. “How far along are you anyway about four months?” He asked. Catherine smiled and touched her stomach. “No Stephen I am almost seven months pregnant.” Stephen stared at her for a moment. “Cathy come on that is not possible you would have to be married to someone with a different metabolism to be that pregnant and look only a few months along.”

Then he frowned. “Oh my God you are pregnant by that freak!” He yelled as he glared at her. “Vincent is the best thing that ever happened to me and he is the love of my life!” She yelled. Then she turned and started to walk toward the door. Stephen took out a bottle and a cloth. “No Cathy I am the love of your life.” He stated. Then he grabbed her from behind and shoved the cloth into her face. Catherine struggled for a few moments then everything went dark. Stephen then picked her up and carried her out of the apartment. “No one will have you but me Cathy.” He told her as he walked out the fire door and down the side steps to the outside of the building where he put her in a van that he had parked waiting. He then got in and drove away from the building.

Below Vincent was working on the lower tunnels when he suddenly felt Catherine’s anger and fear come through the bond. Kanin noticed his friend’s sudden tenseness. “Vincent are you all right?” He asked. Vincent looked at him. “Something has happened to Catherine.” He stated. Kanin took the pick out of his hands. “Well then get going and check on her and your child.” He ordered. Vincent smiled then turned and ran down the tunnel faster than he had ever run in his life. “Please my love be all right.” He whispered to himself.

When he reached Father’s chamber he rushed inside. “Vincent what is wrong?” Father asked as he and Mary looked up from a ledger. “Father where is Catherine?” Vincent asked. Father sighed. “She went above to her old apartment.” Vincent sighed. “Who went with her?” He asked. Father shook his head. “No one was available so she was going to call Joe.” Vincent shook his head. “I have to go to her.” He stated. Father nodded. “Yes of course it is dark now so go find her.” Vincent then ran out of the chamber. Father shook his head. “I pray that she is all right.” He commented. Mary smiled and nodded. “So do I Jacob it would destroy him if anything happened to her or their child.” Father nodded in agreement. “I am going to send a message to Joe’s house in case he did not go to the apartment.” He remarked. Then he left the chamber. Mary watched him leave praying that everything would be all right for Vincent and Catherine.

Vincent arrived at Catherine’s old apartment and took the spare key out from under a flowerpot on the balcony. He quickly unlocked the door and stepped inside. He was about to call out for Catherine when he heard someone entering the apartment. He hid in the bedroom waiting to see who it was. “Cathy it’s Joe are you here?” Joe called out. When he got no answer he pulled out his gun. He was about to walk into the bedroom when he heard a familiar voice behind him. “Joe it’s Vincent.” Joe put the gun away. “I heard you bump something.” He explained. Vincent nodded. “Where is Catherine?” Joe shook his head. “We just got her message we went to see Nancy.” He explained. “I am so sorry about not being here Vincent.” Vincent put his hand on Joe’s shoulder. “Don’t worry my friend none of this is your fault.” Joe smiled. “Well where could she be?” Joe asked as he sat down on a crate in the living room. “Joe I don’t know but wherever she is she was angry then frightened.” Joe suddenly caught a glimpse of something at his feet. “What is this?” He asked as he bent down and picked up the cloth. Both men flinched when they smelled the odor. “Oh God Vincent this has chloroform on it.” Joe stated. Vincent moved back. “Who would use that on Catherine?” He asked. Joe suddenly stood. “I bet it was Bass.” He commented. Vincent nodded in agreement. “We must find her.” he stated. Then he moved toward the balcony doors. “I will meet you at Father’s chamber.” He told Joe. Joe nodded. “I will be there.” Then both men left the apartment.

As this was happening Catherine woke up in a bedroom that she did not recognize. She looked around and gasped when she finally recognized it as the same bedroom in the house that Stephen had bought when he first came back into her life. She sat up and looked around for a way to get out of the room. Suddenly she heard a noise at the door. Stephen smiled as he entered the room. “Hello honey I thought you would sleep all day.” He stated as he put a tray down on the bed. “Stephen why did you bring me here again?” Stephen touched her cheek. “Because we are finally going to live the life that we were always meant to live.” Catherine moved back from his touch. “No Stephen as I told you before I am already married to someone else and I am having his child.” Stephen stood and began to pace. “Well darling that little detail will be taken care of soon.” Catherine looked up at him. “What are you talking about?” She asked. Stephen laughed maniacally. “I have a doctor friend who is going to get rid of the child for us.” Catherine began to shake as her tears came. “No Stephen you can’t do that to my child.” She begged. Stephen suddenly grabbed her by her hair. “Yes Cathy I can and will get rid of that freak’s child.” He then released her. “Now you be a good girl and eat while I go back downstairs and do some work.” He then left the room. Once he was gone Catherine put her head in her hands and began to cry. Oh Vincent please come get me the baby and I need you. She thought to herself.

At that moment Vincent and Joe were in Father’s chamber. They were talking when all of a sudden Vincent reeled. “Vincent are you all right?” Father asked as Joe guided him to a chair. “I just got a desperate sense through the bond.” He cried out. Joe put his hand on Vincent’s arm. “Do you have any clue as to where she may be?” Vincent thought. “Stephen had bought a house when he came back into her life before that he intended to have for them.” Vincent commented. Joe nodded. “Yeah I remember that mansion I was there when they arrested Bass.” He then looked at Vincent. “Bass was babbling about someone who looked like a lion coming after him.” He remarked. Vincent nodded. “He was trying to kill Catherine I went there to save her.” Joe nodded and put his hand on Vincent’s arm. “Well I will go and check it out with Greg.” Vincent nodded. “Yes since it is almost morning I will have to stay here.” Joe smiled. “I will bring her back to you soon.” He promised. Then he turned and left the chamber. Once he was gone Vincent began to cry. Father embraced his distraught son. “They will find her.” he whispered. Vincent looked at him. “I can’t live without her or our child Father they have to bring her home.” Father nodded and continued to hold him.

When Joe arrived at the police station Greg immediately put out an APB on Bass. “Do you remember where the house is?” Greg asked. Joe thought a moment. “Yes I do.” He stated. Then Greg grabbed his coat. “Let’s get out there and get her back before Bass harms her or her child.” Joe nodded. Then they both left the station.

Meanwhile back at Stephen’s house Catherine was downstairs with him in the living room. “Cathy please try to understand honey I only want the chance that was stolen from me before.” He stated as he paced. Catherine shook her head. “No Stephen we were over a long time ago I moved on with my life and fell in love with someone else.” Stephen spun around and slapped her. “You fell in love with a freak of nature!” He screamed. Catherine held her face then she suddenly stood up. “No you are the one who is the freak Vincent is the most wonderful man I have ever known!” Stephen smiled. “Well darling I am sorry but you will never see him again we are leaving for Europe tonight.” Catherine shook her head. “I am not going anywhere with you!” She screamed.

Stephen was about to respond when a voice came from outside. “Give it up Bass we know you are in there.” Joe yelled over a bullhorn. Stephen grabbed Catherine and moved toward the front door. He opened it and held her in front of him as a shield. “I am going to leave here with Catherine and there is nothing you can do to stop me!” He yelled. Then he pushed Catherine out the door and walked with her toward his car.

Unbeknownst to him Greg was positioned by the garage. When he had a clear shot at Stephen he stepped out and yelled at Catherine. “Get down Cathy!” She moved to the side just as Greg took the shot and hit Stephen in the arm. Stephen cried out and dropped his gun. Joe ran up to Catherine and pulled her to her feet. “Are you all right Radcliffe?” He asked as he held her. “Yes just please take me home.” She requested. Joe pulled off his jacket and put it around her shoulders. “Yes your husband is waiting for you.” He stated.

As they were walking toward his car Catherine stopped. “Just a moment Joe.” She told him. She then walked back to where Greg had Stephen. “Stephen I hope that you finally get the help that you so desperately need.” She told him. Stephen looked at her with pure hatred in his eyes. “We could have been happy but you were always too independent!” He spat. Catherine shook her head. She knew that there was no getting through to him anymore. She turned and walked back to Joe’s car. He smiled as he helped her into the passenger seat. Then he got in and they headed back to Manhattan and Vincent.

In the tunnels Vincent was sitting in his and Catherine’s chamber. He looked around at all the baby things that Catherine had been collecting. He smiled when he remembered how happily she arranged them so that they would be readily available when they baby was born. Catherine had told Father, Vincent, and Peter that she wanted to have the baby in their chamber in their bed. At first they were against the idea until Mary stepped in and convinced them that it would make Catherine happy and more comfortable if she could have the baby in their chamber instead of the hospital chamber. They finally relented and Catherine happily began to prepare for the day that their child would come into their world.

Vincent’s thoughts were broken when Mary entered the chamber. “Vincent can I come in?” She asked. Vincent smiles and nodded. “Yes of course is there something you needed?” Mary smiled and sat down beside him. “No dear I just wanted to come be with you for a while until we find out about Catherine.” Vincent smiled. “Thank you for that Mary.” He whispered. She smiled and sat down on the chair close to him. “Vincent Joe and Greg will find her.” Vincent sighed. “I know they will I just wish that I could be there.” Mary smiled. “I know dear.” She then looked around the chamber. “Catherine has done a lot of preparations for the baby.” Vincent smiled. “Yes she has everything that we will need when the baby comes.” Then Vincent looked down. “If the baby comes.” He whispered. Mary shook her head. “No Vincent the baby will be fine.” She chided lovingly. “You have to believe that for Catherine and for you.” They sat there for the next few minutes not saying anything.

At that moment Catherine and Joe entered Father’s chamber. “Catherine thank God!” Father happily exclaimed as she ran into his arms. She held him and cried. “I am so happy to be home.” She whispered. She then moved back out of his arms. “Where is he?” She asked. Father smiled. “I believe he is in your chamber.” She smiled then hugged Joe. “Thank you for everything I have to go to Vincent.” Joe smiled and nodded. “Jenny and I will come see you very soon.” He told her. She smiled then she left the chamber.

A few minutes later Catherine ran into their chamber. “Vincent sweetheart!” She cried out as she entered. Mary smiled and stood. “Catherine dear are you all right?” She asked as they hugged. “Yes I am fine where is Vincent?” Catherine asked almost in a panic. Mary smiled and cupped her cheek. “He is at the whispering bridge dear go to him.” Catherine hugged her again then left the chamber. Mary left the chamber also smiling because she knew that everything would be all right.

At the whispering bridge Vincent was standing listening to the voices. He wanted to scream out for Catherine but he knew that he could not find her. Suddenly he heard someone enter the chamber. His heart began to beat faster when he suddenly felt Catherine’s presence. He spun around and smiled as she ran into his arms. “Oh my Catherine are you all right?” He asked as he held her. Catherine held him tightly. “Yes I am fine.” Vincent then moved back slightly. “How is the baby?” Catherine smiled. “The baby is fine I was not hurt.” She assured him. “Father should examine you to make sure.” Catherine nodded. “We can go in a moment I just want to be alone with you right now.” Vincent smiled and pulled her back into his arms. “I was so afraid.” He whispered. Catherine looked up at him. “I know love so was I.”

After a moment Vincent moved back slightly. “What happened to him?” Catherine sighed. “He is going back into the hospital.” Vincent shook his head and smiled slightly. “Even after he kidnapped and held you against your will you can still have compassion for him.” he stated. Catherine nodded. “Well I feel sorry for him because he is very sick.” She stated. Vincent held her tightly again. “I would have died if he had hurt you or our child.” Catherine suddenly shivered. “What is it Catherine?” Vincent asked concerned. Catherine shook her head. “It is nothing.” She whispered. Vincent put his hand under her chin and brought her eyes up to meet his. “Catherine tell me please.” She sighed. “He was going to have something done to the baby.” She whispered. Vincent held her tighter. “What was he going to have done?” he asked in a whisper. Catherine shook her head. “He never truly said he just said that he had a doctor friend that would take care of it.” Vincent suddenly picked her up. “We should let Father examine you then I am putting you to bed.” Catherine smiled. “Are you going to join me there?” She asked slyly. Vincent smiled and gently kissed her. “But of course my angel.” He responded. Then he picked her up and carried her out of the chamber.

As the months began to pass Catherine and Vincent were happy together. The memories of that horrible time with Bass had faded to a bad memory. Catherine had agreed when Vincent requested that she not go above again. She felt that the world above was no longer a place where she wished to be. Then one night as they lay in bed Catherine suddenly awoke with a great pain. Vincent was immediately awake also. “What is it my love?” He asked. Catherine held her stomach for a moment then smiled. “I do believe I am in labor.” She stated. Vincent smiled. “Will you be all right if I go alert Father and Mary?” He asked as he got out of bed and dressed. Catherine smiled. “Yes honey I will be fine.” She assured him. Vincent leaned over and kissed her before he left the chamber. “I love you Catherine.” He whispered. She smiled at him. “And I love you.” She answered.

Later that morning as the tunnel residents began to awaken they were greeted by the news on the pipes that Vincent and Catherine were the parents of a beautiful healthy baby boy. In their chamber Catherine lay in their bed holding their son as he nursed. Vincent was in bed beside her. “He is so beautiful.” She whispered. Vincent smiled and gently touched the baby’s cheek. “Yes just as beautiful as you are.” Catherine looked up at him. “And you too.” She told him. Vincent smiled and put his arm around her shoulders. “Catherine you have brought so many gifts into my life that I don’t know how to thank you.” Catherine looked at the baby then back at her beloved husband. “You are the one who has brought more gifts into my life than I can ever thank you for.” Vincent smiled. “And this little one is our greatest gift.” They spent the rest of the day with their new son. Their lives had truly evolved into the dream that they thought they could never live together.

EPILOGUE:

A month later everyone gathered in the main chamber. Father stood beside Vincent and Catherine. And Devin stood on the other side of them. He had come home soon after the baby’s birth when he found out that he had a nephew. “We welcome the child with love so that he may learn to love.” Father stated. “We welcome the child with gifts that he may learn how to give.” He then smiled at Vincent and Catherine. “And finally we welcome the child with a name upon which I believe Vincent and Catherine have decided.” Vincent smiled and put his arm around Catherine. “Catherine and I have chosen to name our son Jacob.” Father smiled proudly. Then everyone congratulated the new parents. After that they all moved to the great hall for a great celebration. A celebration of new life and of a deep lasting love between Catherine and her beloved Vincent the protector of the tunnels.
