I sculpted Vincent's
bust in 1991. It is about 13
inches tall and about 12 inches wide.
I took photos as I was
working on it. I worked in pottery type clay, which is very
impermanent.
You have to keep it
wrapped in damp rags and plastic. If you let it dry out, it
shrinks and cracks. It is really glorified mud, and quite
fragile.
To make it permanent,
I would have had to hollow it out to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch
thick, *then* let it dry and fired it in a kiln to make it
into ceramic. But I would only have one copy of it then. If
I had known how to make molds better, I could have made a
plaster mold with which to make multiple hollow ceramic clay
castings.
|
I tried to do that and
did not succeed. Instead I made a rubber mold which is more
flexible and therefore more forgiving, and made about 5
hollow castings in Hydrostone, which is a very hard form of
plaster.
I colored the white
castings a light beige color. (see images on the next
page)The original clay piece was a kind of kaki medium
grey-brown color.
When I started
sculpting, I used some leftover clay which was a different
color than the rest of the clay I used. That is why, in the
earliest photos, the bust looks multi-colored - it was.
It took weeks to
sculpt and cast the bust. But I worked on it off and on and
can't begin to guess how many hours it was.
